Chapter 15: The Hearing Begins

#content-1

The conference room designated for the Ethics Board hearing was stark, functional, and devoid of personal touches. A long, polished table dominated the center, flanked by several chairs. Director Evelyn Thompson sat at the head, her expression impassive, her gaze sharp and intelligent. Two other board members, a senior HR executive and the company’s chief legal counsel, sat beside her.

Leo and I were directed to seats on one side of the table. Across from us sat Alistair Finch, flanked by his own legal team, two stern-faced lawyers in expensive suits. Alistair’s usual charismatic composure was strained, but he still maintained a facade of calm indignation. He met my gaze briefly, a flicker of something unreadable in his eyes, before turning away. The sheer audacity of his continued pretense of innocence was a fresh layer of personal cruelty.

Director Thompson cleared her throat, her voice cutting through the tension in the room. “Thank you all for attending this internal hearing.”

She scanned the faces at the table, her gaze lingering on Alistair for a moment. “The Corporate Ethics Board has convened to address the serious allegations raised in the recent media report concerning Mr. Finch and the development of the ‘Orion Protocol.'”

She clasped her hands together on the table, her posture straight and formal. “Our objective is to conduct a fair and thorough investigation, upholding the integrity of InnovateCorp’s ethical standards. We are committed to an objective search for the truth, regardless of individual standing or reputation.”

Her words were measured, professional, but they carried an unspoken weight. Alistair’s lawyers shifted in their seats, exchanging brief glances. He himself remained unnervingly still, a testament to his years of practice in corporate maneuvering.

“We have reviewed the published article and the initial evidence presented,” Director Thompson continued. “We will now proceed with testimony and the presentation of further evidence.”

A chill ran down my spine. The air was thick with unspoken accusations and defenses. This was not a friendly discussion; it was a formal proceeding, a trial within the corporate walls. My heart pounded with a mixture of fear and anticipation.

Director Thompson turned to us. “Ms. Bellamy, Mr. Bellamy, thank you for your cooperation. We will begin by hearing from a witness via video conference.”

A large screen on the far wall flickered to life, displaying the familiar, cluttered office of Marcus Albright. His face, etched with experience, filled the screen. He looked calm, collected, and ready.

Alistair visibly stiffened, a subtle shift in his posture that only I, who had observed his every nuance for years, would notice. His composure, carefully maintained until now, seemed to waver. He had underestimated Marcus, just as he had underestimated me. The secret witness, the ghost in the machine, was about to speak. The reckoning had truly begun.
