His Father Declared My Daughter a Saintess for an Ancient Empire, But I Knew It Was a Sacrificial Death Sentence
Lucas, armored and enraged, stalked towards the obsidian altar, his sword gripped tightly. The air in the ritual chamber crackled with dark energy, and the eclipse had now plunged the space into an eerie, oppressive gloom. Lyra’s terrified gaze met his, a silent plea for rescue.
“Father, stop this madness!” Lucas roared, his voice echoing. He threw down the deciphered coded missives and Kaelen’s crudely drawn map onto the stone floor at Cassian’s feet. “These are the Brotherhood’s plans! This is Kaelen’s confession! They prove this is no blessing; it’s a sacrifice!”
Cassian recoiled as the documents landed, his eyes briefly flicking to the map. Then, his face hardened, his expression one of utter disdain. “Forged! All of it! Lies crafted by your enemies to sow discord and turn you against me! Against the sacred will of the Empire!” His voice boomed, filled with a chilling authority.
“Enemies?” Lucas snarled. “Kaelen confessed you ordered the initial forged decrees! He then confessed the Brotherhood forced him to alter the ancient prophecy scrolls, turning ‘blessing of the sun’ into ‘devourer of shadows’!”
Cassian let out a dismissive, scornful laugh, a harsh, grating sound that chilled Lucas to the bone. “Kaelen is a cowardly Scribe, easily swayed by bribes and threats! He would say anything to save his wretched hide! You, my son, have fallen prey to delusion! Your grief over your estranged relationship with Lyra has twisted your mind.”
His father’s words were a deliberate, cruel gaslighting, a calculated attack on Lucas’s sanity. Cassian pointed a finger, thick with ceremonial rings, at Lucas. “You have become a sacrilege! A madman! You dare to interrupt a divine ceremony, orchestrated for the salvation of our very lineage, with your baseless accusations and fabricated evidence?”
Lucas felt a surge of incandescent fury. To deny the truth in the face of such overwhelming proof, to accuse him of madness while Lyra lay strapped to an altar, was a profound and personal betrayal. It twisted a knife in his gut, a specific, cutting cruelty that his father preferred a perverse ritual over his own son’s clear-eyed pleas.
“Salvation?” Lucas spat, gesturing wildly at Lyra on the altar, her small body trembling. “You call this salvation? Strapping your own granddaughter to an altar for a monstrous entity you barely comprehend? You are sacrificing her for your twisted ambition!”
“Silence!” Cassian thundered, his face contorted in a mask of righteous anger. “Lyra is destined for glory! She will be revered! She will elevate our bloodline! You simply lack the vision, the faith, to understand the true depth of this sacred act! You are a primitive hunter, incapable of grasping the arcane truths of our lineage!” The sneering dismissal of Lucas’s life and understanding was another calculated insult, belittling his entire existence.
Cassian turned to the robed figures of the Brotherhood, his voice ringing with renewed command. “Seize him! He is a traitor to the Empire, a blasphemer against the sacred will of our ancestors! Remove this delusional fool from my sight!”
The robed figures stirred, their faceless masks turning towards Lucas. Their daggers, previously aimed at Lyra, now shifted, pointing threateningly at him. Their movements were swift, coordinated, and utterly silent. Two hulking figures, their forms radiating a chilling strength, immediately lunged towards Lucas, their intentions clear.
Lucas raised his sword, preparing for the fight, but he knew he was heavily outnumbered. The Brotherhood figures moved with unnatural speed, their strikes powerful and precise. He parried the first blow, the clang of steel echoing loudly in the chamber. He sidestepped another, narrowly avoiding a dagger that would have pierced his side.
He fought with the desperation of a cornered beast, but the sheer force and coordination of the Brotherhood were overwhelming. They pressed him back, their masked faces expressionless, relentless. Lyra’s whimpers from the altar seemed to grow louder, piercing through the chaos, tearing at his resolve.
“Foolish boy!” Cassian’s voice cut through the din, filled with a cold triumph. “You cannot stop what is destined! The merging will proceed!”
Lucas stumbled, pushed against the cold stone wall, his armor scraping harshly. One of the figures struck his sword arm, momentarily stunning him. Another lunged, aiming a dagger at his unprotected throat. He saw the glint of the blade, the finality of it. He was being overwhelmed, just as Cassian had intended, powerless against the combined forces of his father and the Brotherhood. Lyra’s face, etched with terror, filled his vision.
