Chapter 15: The Signal (Climax Build-up)

#content-1

Leo stood before me, basking in his perceived victory, the smirk back in place. He thought he had neutralized every threat, every piece of leverage I possessed. His gloating filled the cold air of the warehouse, a suffocating arrogance.

“You’re a sentimental old fool, Eli,” he said, shaking his head slowly. “Clinging to ancient scrolls and dusty promises. The game has changed. It’s about power, not parlor tricks.”

He gestured dismissively at the lone document on the table, the “retirement package.” “Sign the paper, Eli. Take your paltry sum. And perhaps, just perhaps, you’ll live to see another sunrise. Or do you want to die for a ghost?”

My gaze remained fixed on his face, betraying nothing. Inside, my mind was racing, processing every detail he had just revealed. The offshore accounts, the banks—he had mentioned them casually, in his moment of triumph.

“You really think you’ve won, Leo?” I asked, my voice calm, almost detached.

He chuckled, a short, sharp sound. “Oh, I haven’t just won, Eli. I’ve dismantled you. Bit by bit. Starting with those pathetic whispers of yours about senility, culminating with every last cent of your original capital, now safely beyond your reach.”

He elaborated, savoring each word. “The accounts are held in shell corporations, of course. ‘Serpent’s Kiss Holdings’ in Panama, ‘Lion’s Den Enterprises’ in the British Virgin Islands. All managed through a private bank in Geneva. You can write all the letters you want, Eli. They won’t even acknowledge receipt.”

The specific names of the shell corporations and the banks, carelessly dropped in his moment of triumph, were exactly what Sophia needed. Leo’s overconfidence was blinding him to the true danger he was in. He was so certain of his impregnable position that he was practically handing us the keys to his undoing. This was the ultimate petty cruelty, believing he could rub my face in the specifics of his theft.

I felt the small, discreet comm-link in my inner jacket pocket. My fingers subtly brushed against it, finding the small button. This was it. The moment was upon us.

“You’re making a grave error, Leo,” I warned, my gaze steady.

He scoffed. “The only error being made is yours, Eli. You came here, unarmed, relying on fables. You underestimated me. And now, you pay the price.”

He raised his hand, a signal to Vince. Vince, in turn, nodded to his men. Their hands dropped to their weapons, their faces grim, ready for the command. The air crackled with lethal intent.

I met Leo’s triumphant gaze, holding it for a beat longer than necessary. Then, with a slow, deliberate movement, I raised my left hand, as if to adjust my watch. My thumb pressed twice, briefly, against the comm-link.

A faint, almost imperceptible click echoed in my ear. The signal was sent. Sophia had it.

Leo didn’t notice. He was too consumed by his own arrogance, too focused on my impending downfall. He was already rehearsing his victory speech, completely unaware that his carefully constructed empire was about to crumble.

“Any last words, Eli?” Leo asked, a cruel smile playing on his lips. “A final plea? A confession of your newfound senility?”

His taunts, his smug demeanor, were like fuel to my resolve. He thought he had sealed my fate, but in his hubris, he had inadvertently provided the final, critical pieces of information. He had given Sophia everything she needed to expose him.

The enforcers took another step forward, closing the circle. Vince’s eyes glowed with anticipation. The moment of truth was here. Leo was ready to dictate my surrender, completely unaware that the real verdict was about to be delivered, not by him, but by a ghost from the past, wielded by a woman he had long underestimated.
