Chapter 18: The Helena Land Office (Resolution / Epilogue)

Elijah’s confession hung in the air, thick and foul, like the black silt from the well. My vision blurred for a moment, the sheer depravity of his actions overwhelming me.

Then, the house began to shake. Violently.

A deep, tearing sound ripped through the floorboards. Cracks spiderwebbed across the ceiling plaster. The brass lamp on the table wobbled, threatening to topple.

From beneath my feet, I heard a high-pitched shriek, a sound that was both earth and something else. A freezing draft swept through the parlor, so cold it burned my lungs.

Frost bloomed on the windowpanes, not in a gentle pattern, but in jagged, tearing lines, as if invisible claws were rending the glass itself. The entity was coming.

Elijah didn’t seem to notice the escalating chaos around him. His eyes were fixed on me, gleaming with triumph and madness. “You see, Clara? The well is responding! My sacrifice is nearly complete!”

“Your sacrifice is worthless!” I screamed over the roar of the house, pulling the original 1878 Marital Land Covenant from my bodice. My hands trembled, but I held the blood-stained parchment up in the flickering lamplight.

“What is that?” he sneered, his eyes darting to the paper. “Another of your mother’s useless sentimental trinkets?”

“This is the original land covenant!” I shouted, my voice raw. “And it says that you are a fool, Elijah!”

I unfolded the document, my finger stabbing at the elegant script of Clause 14B.

“Clause 14B,” I spat, my voice ringing with a fierce, desperate certainty. “It states: ‘In the event that the prospective groom dies of non-natural causes prior to the solemnization of marriage, all territorial mineral and land titles shall instantly void, reverting the property to public domain!’”

Elijah’s triumphant smile faltered. His eyes, for the first time, showed a flicker of confusion, then outright fear.

“Void,” I repeated, pushing the word into his face. “Do you understand, Elijah? *Void!* The moment you poisoned Silas and threw his body into that well, this land, this silver, your entire scheme—it all became legally worthless!”

The house groaned louder, a sound like a wounded beast. The floorboards beneath us buckled and splintered. Dust and plaster rained down from the ceiling.

“Your forced marriage to Thomas cannot make this land legally yours!” I cried, my voice barely audible over the escalating cacophony. “The contract died with Silas, the moment you murdered him! You gained nothing! You’ll never get the silver!”

Elijah’s face drained of color. The revolver in his hand wavered. His eyes, no longer manic with greed, were now wide with dawning horror, staring at the words on the parchment, the cold, irrefutable legal truth.

His entire plan, his years of manipulation, his monstrous acts—all for nothing. It was empty. The void wasn’t just beneath the house; it was in his very soul.

Your bridegroom is six feet under in the frozen timber, Clara, and crying won't buy your fare back to Missouri.
