Chapter 15: The Unseen Trap

#content-1

I chose a secluded corner of Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden for our meeting.

The vibrant foliage and distant calls of exotic birds felt absurdly peaceful against the storm brewing inside me.

The bench I sat on was old, weathered, but offered a clear view of the entrance.

My bag, holding the carefully organized copies of incriminating documents, lay beside me.

I checked my phone for the time: 10:55 AM. Robert would arrive in five minutes.

My heart hammered against my ribs, a primal drumbeat of anticipation and dread.

To calm my nerves, I pulled out the original document of the fabricated financial irregularity, the one I’d taken the fall for two decades ago.

I knew it by heart, every line, every false entry.

Yet, as my eyes scanned it one last time, a subtle, unsettling detail snagged my attention.

It wasn’t a large, glaring error.

It was a tiny asterisk, almost invisible, beside a seemingly innocuous date.

The asterisk referenced a footnote, written in the tiniest script at the bottom of the page: “See Schedule B – Subsidiary Liability Clause.”

My blood ran cold.

I had never paid attention to that footnote.

Schedule B was a standard, boilerplate legal attachment, usually filled with generic disclaimers.

But this specific clause, “Subsidiary Liability,” was a viper in the grass.

It implied that if the primary fabricated accounts were ever legally scrutinized and exposed, *I*, as the “orchestrator” of the irregularity, would not only be implicated but would assume direct, personal financial and legal responsibility for *any related and undisclosed financial dealings* of Robert Jensen.

It was a trap within a trap, a contingency Robert had meticulously woven into the very document meant to protect Eleanor and, by extension, me.

He had ensured that if I ever tried to fully clear my name through legal channels, this clause would activate, making me liable for some of his other, possibly unknown, financial schemes.

He had always intended to have a piece of me, a way to drag me down with him.

The sickening realization washed over me like a cold wave.

He hadn’t just used me; he had set me up for failure, a long-game act of profound malice.

It was a personal cruelty, a masterstroke of manipulation that left me feeling foolish for my youthful naivete, and utterly exposed.

“You bastard,” I whispered, the words barely audible.

Just then, a figure emerged from the entrance, strolling casually down the path.

Robert.

He looked around, a smirk playing on his lips, as if savoring the anticipation of our confrontation.

He was oblivious to the new knowledge I possessed, the full extent of his foresight and cruelty.

But I was no longer oblivious.

My confrontation with him would not just be about justice; it would be a dance with a devil who held a hidden leash around my neck.
