The 1968 Broadcast Tapes: How My Uncle Used an Underground Radio Show to Cover Up Serial Murder
👉 Previous Decision: You arrived here from Chapter 15 after confronting Uncle Arthur.
Arthur leaned back in his chair, a man utterly at peace with his monstrous revelations. He watched me, his gaze analytical, almost amused. The weight of his plan—my framing as the Apex Killer—pressed down on me, a suffocating realization of the depth of his depravity.
“You look shocked, Julian,” he mused, a cruel glint in his eyes. “Did you think I was the only one with secrets?”
He gestured vaguely towards the window, where the city lights glittered. “The federal authorities, the intelligence agencies… they know, Julian. They’ve known about the $185,000 fraud. They’ve known about the auditors’ deaths.”
My blood ran cold. “They knew? And they did nothing?”
“Of course not,” Arthur scoffed. “A scandal of this magnitude? A high-ranking military contractor, wartime profiteering, murdered auditors… it would shatter public trust. Fuel the anti-war movement. They’d rather bury it. Keep the illusion of stability.”
He picked up a pen, twirling it idly between his fingers. “They want the Apex Killer case closed, quietly. And they’re willing to make a deal to ensure it. A deal, Julian, that includes you.”
He pushed a thick envelope across the desk. It looked like a bank draft. “A full restoration of your $4,200. Plus, a substantial sum for your silence. And your radio license. Reinstated. You can have your station back, your life back. All of it.”
My eyes flickered to the envelope, then to his face. “What’s the catch?”
“The confession letter,” Arthur said, his voice dropping to a low purr. “And those certified bank records, if you have them. You surrender them to me. And you walk away. Forever. You forget about the Apex Killer, about the fraud, about everything you’ve learned. The truth remains buried, and we all move on.”
He smiled, a chillingly calm expression. “No public charges. No investigations. The military intelligence division will ensure it. They’re already on board. You’ll be a free man, Julian. A rich, free man, with a clean slate. The only condition is silence. Permanent, absolute silence.”
The offer hung in the air, a twisted temptation. My life, my livelihood, my freedom. All for the price of turning a blind eye to murder and corruption.
