Deposed Lady Vivienne, Stripped of Her Title by Her Father for Refusing a Marriage, Forges a Desperate Alliance to Ignite a Bloody Royal Civil War.
The news of Gideon Finch’s public shaming and banishment spread like wildfire, reaching even our secluded mountain hideaway. It was a chilling testament to Alaric’s ruthlessness, yet for me, it also ignited a desperate, strategic hope. Gideon, stripped of everything, now had nothing left but his conscience.
Barely a day after the reports of Gideon’s exile, another, more ominous piece of news arrived via our network of merchants and farmers. Alaric, sensing growing unrest among the remaining lesser lords and fearing the slow seep of truth, was calling a Grand Council.
“He means to cement his rule,” Rhys Emrys explained, his frail hands trembling slightly as he interpreted a coded message from a sympathetic scribe. “To force all remaining loyalist lords and vassals to publicly reaffirm Serena as his sole heir. And to declare you and Sir Kaelen enemies of the state, beyond redemption.”
This was Alaric’s counter-move, a grand display of power intended to quash all dissent and solidify his tyranny. He would use the council to paint me as a witch, Kaelen as a barbarian, and silence any whispers of a true heir or a Founder’s Decree. He would force every lord to swear fealty, binding them to his lies.
“It is a trap,” Kaelen stated, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword. “A public show of strength. He means to lure us out, or to condemn us to perpetual exile.”
“It is also our opportunity,” I countered, my mind racing, already piecing together a daring plan. “It will gather every powerful lord, every loyalist, every hesitant voice in one room. It’s the perfect stage for our truth.”
Rhys nodded slowly. “Indeed. The Grand Council, by ancient Valorian tradition, is supposed to be a forum of justice, where all grievances can be heard. Alaric plans to pervert that, but the form remains. If the Decree were to be presented there…”
The thought was exhilarating and terrifying in equal measure. To bring the stone tablets, the evidence of Alaric’s usurpation, into the very heart of his power, before all his assembled lords, was an act of unimaginable audacity. It would be a direct challenge, forcing everyone to choose.
But it also meant infiltrating the most heavily guarded location in Valoria, during its most secure event. It meant facing Alaric and Serena directly, with no room for error.
“How would we even get the tablets inside?” Kaelen asked, echoing my unspoken fear. “They are heavy. And the security will be absolute.”
“We will find a way,” I vowed, my voice firm. “And we will need Gideon. He knows the palace. He knows its protocols, its secrets. And now, he has nothing to lose.”
The irony was not lost on me. Alaric, in his ruthless campaign to isolate me and consolidate his power, was inadvertently creating the perfect stage for his own downfall. His efforts to ensure his absolute control were forcing my hand, pushing me towards a decisive, public confrontation that could ignite the civil war we had so desperately tried to avoid.
A specific, petty cruelty came to mind: Alaric’s annual “Loyalty Feast,” where any noble who showed even the slightest hesitation in praising him would find their land tax doubled, or their harvest magically blighted, a subtle, but brutal form of enforcement. The Grand Council would be an even grander version of this, but it also contained the seed of his destruction.
We sent out a carefully coded message, using a new variant of the Dragon’s Weave embedded in a package of medicinal herbs. It was addressed to Gideon Finch, now a banished man, believed to be wandering the outer provinces. My message was direct, no longer shrouded in riddles. It appealed to his sense of justice, to his desire for redemption, and to his intimate knowledge of Alaric’s court. It was a desperate plea for his intervention, now that he had nothing left to lose. The stakes had never been higher.
