Chapter 16: The Next Morning’s Message

#content-1

The next morning, a soft, golden light filled my seamstress shop. It was 7:00 AM. Lily was happily playing on a colorful rug in the corner, chattering to her stuffed bunny. I sat at my workbench, the familiar whir of my sewing machine a comforting drone. I was mending a delicate lace curtain, the rhythm of my work a balm to my soul.

My phone buzzed softly on the table beside me. I picked it up. A text message.

It was from an unfamiliar number, but the sender was immediately clear.

“Order restored back home?”

General Marcus Calder. His words were precise, direct, just like the man himself.

I paused, a small smile touching my lips. I looked out the window at Main Street, already stirring with the day’s first movements. The bakery lights were on. Mr. Henderson waved from his delivery truck. The normal rhythm of Oakhaven had resumed, cleansed of Lucas’s poisonous influence.

My shop was open. My money was back. Lily was safe. Lucas was gone, swallowed by the silent justice of Arthur Knox.

I typed my reply. Two simple words.

“Completely. Thank you.”

I put my phone down, the screen darkening, and picked up my needle. The lace was intricate, requiring careful, focused work. A town built on whispers always crumbles in silence.
