Two weeks later, the smell of fresh paint still clung faintly to the air in our new apartment. It was smaller, certainly. A compact two-bedroom rental on the other side of the city, a modest urban space far removed from the spacious house we’d once called home. The old luxury was gone, replaced by practicality.

I had fully embraced my freelance writing, churning out articles, slowly, meticulously, trying to stitch my professional reputation back together, one byline at a time. It was a grind, a constant hustle to make ends meet, but it was honest work.

Leo was back in school, his steps lighter than before. He’d even joined the chess club, finding a quiet confidence in strategy and logic. We still faced financial challenges, the budget tight, the future uncertain. But there was a fragile sense of peace, a quiet rhythm forming in our new, simpler life. We were here, together, and that was what mattered most.
