Chapter 17: Chaos Erupts

#content-1

The passage exploded into a scene of raw, desperate fury. Seraphina, her face contorted, shrieked, “Treason! Nathaniel, you traitor!” She lunged for the table, her hand reaching for the ancient parchment.

I reacted instinctively, snatching the codicil and the Crimson Seed tablet just as her fingers grazed the edge of the accident report. Elder Croft, his face a mask of cold, murderous rage, moved with startling speed towards Nathaniel, who stood frozen, his eyes wide with a terror that spoke volumes.

“You fool!” Croft snarled at Nathaniel, gripping his arm with an iron vice. “You have doomed us all!”

I knew I had only seconds. My eyes darted to the back of the passage, where Lily’s sketch had faintly marked another, even smaller, escape route—a narrow, almost undetectable fissure in the stone wall, concealed by a hanging tapestry. It was a secondary emergency exit, a final, desperate measure Lily had discovered.

“Eleanor, run!” Nathaniel choked out, his voice hoarse, as Croft spun him around, effectively restraining him. It was the first act of protection he had shown me in weeks, a fleeting glimpse of the man I had once known.

Seraphina, momentarily distracted by Nathaniel’s struggle, turned her attention back to me. “Give me that, you witch!” she screamed, taking a threatening step forward.

I didn’t hesitate. Clutching the documents, I scrambled towards the fissure, tearing through the ancient tapestry. The opening was tight, barely wide enough for my body, but it offered escape. As I squeezed through, I heard the dull thud of a struggle, Seraphina’s furious curses, and Croft’s sharp, commanding voice.

I emerged into a disused storage closet in a distant, rarely visited wing of the estate, my lungs burning, my heart pounding. I pushed the heavy, bolted door shut, plunging myself into darkness. The sounds of chaos from the passage, now muffled, soon faded entirely.

News of the “heretical document” and a violent schism within the Caldwell family, fueled by whispers of Nathaniel’s betrayal, spread through the Elysian Path like wildfire. The ensuing days were a blur of frantic rumors and panicked calls on my burner phone. Cult members, bewildered and terrified, didn’t know who to believe.

Elder Croft and Seraphina, seizing control, immediately launched a public denouncement of Nathaniel, painting him as a weak, corrupted leader who had allowed an outsider—me—to desecrate sacred family trusts. They spun a tale of my “spiritual instability” and “manipulative nature,” using my grief as a weapon.

But the details were too specific. Whispers about an “ancient codicil” and a “Crimson Seed tablet” began to circulate, undermining their carefully crafted narrative. Some trusted Nathaniel more than Croft, especially those who had known his quiet dedication for years.

The community, once so unified, was thrown into utter disarray. Faith, once an unshakeable bedrock, fractured under the weight of conflicting accusations. Members chose sides, some staunchly loyal to Croft and Seraphina, others defending Nathaniel as a victim of my supposed machinations, and a growing number questioning everything. The Elysian Path, a symbol of unwavering spiritual harmony, was tearing itself apart from within.

I listened to it all from the safety of my temporary hiding place, a small, discreet motel room on the outskirts of the city. The reports of chaos were both terrifying and grimly satisfying. My personal act of defiance had ignited a powder keg, and the tremors were shaking the entire foundation of the cult. The truth, even in its raw, fragmented form, was beginning to dismantle the lie.
