The Sunday morning sun, weak and hazy, leaked through the greasy blinds of Maya’s cramped rental apartment kitchen in Van Nuys. She stirred a pot of simple oatmeal on the stove.
The small laminate counter was covered with stacks of unpacked cardboard boxes. Toby’s colorful drawing books were scattered across the table, mixed with stray crayons.
Her phone buzzed, vibrating on the counter. It was a formal email from her record label.
It confirmed full ownership of her master recordings. It also confirmed an advance check deposit of $350,000, cleared directly into her newly secured account.
Maya turned off the stove burner. She scooped oatmeal into a plastic bowl and handed it to Toby, who was already sitting patiently.
Then she sat down herself, picking up her own spoon. The kitchen was quiet.
People think fame gives you power, but real power is just being able to lock your front door at night and know everything inside belongs to you.
