Chapter 17: The Deleted Threads

#content-1

The silence that followed Marcus Albright’s testimony was absolute, broken only by the hum of the video conference equipment. Alistair Finch’s face was a mask of barely suppressed panic, his usual polished demeanor fractured. His legal team looked grim, their brief whispers now more agitated.

Director Thompson’s gaze swept across the room, her expression unyielding. “Thank you, Mr. Albright. Your testimony has been noted.”

She then turned to one of the other board members, the HR executive. “Ms. Davies, can you please report on the findings of our internal IT forensic team?”

Ms. Davies, a severe woman with an air of unflappable authority, nodded. She consulted a tablet in front of her. “Yes, Director. Following Mr. Albright’s sworn statements and the allegations in the public report, our forensic specialists conducted a deep scan of legacy servers and off-site backup archives, specifically targeting the timeframes and keywords identified.”

The room seemed to shrink, the air growing thick with anticipation. Alistair visibly stiffened, his eyes darting between Ms. Davies and Director Thompson. His composed facade was now rapidly cracking under the pressure. The tension was palpable, a live wire running through the room.

“Despite Mr. Finch’s explicit instructions for permanent deletion,” Ms. Davies continued, her voice clear and precise, “and significant efforts to overwrite these records, our team was able to recover specific email threads.”

A collective intake of breath rippled through the room. The implication was clear: Alistair’s efforts to erase his tracks had failed. The “ghost in the machine,” as Leo called Marcus, had provided the key to unlocking Alistair’s buried secrets. The personal cruelty of Alistair’s attempts to wipe Elara’s history, as though her existence could be simply deleted, was now being turned back on him.

“These recovered communications,” Ms. Davies stated, “include several exchanges between Mr. Finch and InnovateCorp’s legal department, dated between late 2012 and early 2013.”

She looked directly at Alistair, her gaze unwavering. “They pertain specifically to the drafting of the intellectual property clause for Ms. Elara Bellamy’s employment contract, and subsequent discussions regarding the ‘Orion Protocol acquisition strategy.'”

Alistair looked as if he had been struck. His face was ashen, his mouth slightly agape. He had truly believed his digital misdeeds were erased, leaving no trace. The meticulously planned cover-up, meticulously preserved by Marcus, was now exposed.

Director Thompson then picked up a printout, its pages crisp and white. She held them up for everyone to see. “These are excerpts from those recovered email threads.”

The room fell silent once more, a profound stillness settling upon everyone. This was the build-up, the final moment before the dam broke. The evidence was now physically present, undeniable, ready to be read aloud. The truth, meticulously hidden for years, was about to be laid bare.
