Chapter 17: Three Days Later

#content-1

Three days after the public exposure, the world felt simultaneously lighter and heavier. My father’s name was cleared. Our family finances were secure. Julian and Veronica Kross were facing legal consequences.

Yet, I found myself walking through the dingy, fluorescent-lit basement hallway of Sunset Studios once more. The air was stale, the linoleum floor scuffed and scarred. This was the exact same dismal holding room where I had sat for my very first audition six years ago.

I was not here for a celebration. I was here for a minor ADR voice-over pickup session, a small, mandated task dictated by my rigid, newly restored contract. The machine, it seemed, cared little for personal victories.

I sat down on a worn plastic folding chair, the kind that creaked under pressure. I pulled out a fresh script side from my bag. New lines. New dialogue. The familiar scent of freshly printed paper filled my nostrils.

Beside me, another ambitious fifteen-year-old actor fidgeted, smoothing the front of his jacket. He looked up, offered a forced, competitive smile, his eyes bright with a hunger I knew all too well.

“Hey,” he said, his voice eager. “You Leo? Heard you just signed a huge deal.”

I nodded, giving him a small, polite smile in return. I looked at my own reflection in the scuffed glass door, seeing a ghost of the earnest ten-year-old who had first sat in this room.

I had uncovered the truth. I had secured my money. But standing in this cold basement waiting room, I realized the machine never changes—it just waits for the next kid to step up to the mic.
