Drink the tea, Julian, you look exhausted after the campaign rally, my father-in-law, Senator Arthur Montgomery, said softly as he patted my shoulder.

Chapter 20: RESOLUTION/EPILOGUE: Two Weeks Later

Federal marshals arrived at Senator Montgomery’s sprawling estate, their SUVs sweeping up the long, tree-lined driveway, red and blue lights flashing silently in the twilight. Expanded charges for conspiracy and attempted murder now gave them the mandate for re-arrest. They found the residence pristine, the manicured lawns impeccable, but utterly empty. No Senator Montgomery. Not a trace.

Simultaneously, air traffic control received a report from an unlisted airfield deep in the Adirondacks. A private charter jet, registered to an offshore corporation with untraceable shell ownership, had taken off less than an hour ago, heading northeast, towards international airspace.

The marshals scoured the estate, finding only an old, dusty campaign brochure left on a desk. They found no answers, no Senator. Only the chilling silence of an adversary who had once again slipped through their grasp.

Back at a secure FBI safe house, the news of Montgomery’s escape hung heavy in the air. Clara and Lily, still recovering, huddled together. My phone, tucked in my pocket, vibrated. The caller ID was blocked. An untraceable satellite line.

I stared at it, a cold dread creeping through my veins, then answered.

“Julian.” Montgomery’s voice, cold and devoid of his usual political warmth, spoke from the other end. The connection was clear, unsettlingly so, as if he were just in the next room.

“You took my election, Julian,” he said, his voice laced with a venomous calm. “You broke my public machine. But you will never sleep peacefully again.”

The line went dead. No threat of specific action, no demands. Just a chilling promise, an icy, lingering dread that settled deep in my bones. Montgomery had fled the country, undoubtedly with millions in uncollected PAC funds, leaving a sleeper threat, an unseen blade hanging over my newly recovered family.

Drink the tea, Julian, you look exhausted after the campaign rally, my father-in-law, Senator Arthur Montgomery, said softly as he patted my shoulder.
