A collective gasp, then a low murmur, rippled through the courtroom. The gavel struck, a final, chilling sound. I rushed to Tommy, pulling him into my arms as he burst into tears, his small body wracked with sobs. He had been so brave, and it had all been for nothing.
Elias Croft rose from his seat, a triumphant smile finally breaking across his face. He exchanged a brief, curt nod with Harrington, then strode out of the courtroom, an unpunished victor. Susanna stood frozen, the notebook still clutched in her hands, her face etched with a mix of defiance and crushing defeat.
Calvin, his face pale with fury, confronted Judge Finch as the courtroom cleared.
“Your Honor, how could you ignore a witness, a child, who bravely came forward? How could you dismiss a pattern of behavior that clear?” Calvin’s voice was hoarse with indignation.
Judge Finch sighed, adjusting his glasses. “Mr. Price, I preside over a court of law, not a court of sentiment. You lacked sufficient admissible evidence. That is the long and short of it.”
He leaned closer, his voice dropping to a warning whisper. “Your zeal, Mr. Price, has been noted. You pushed the boundaries of professional conduct. Such behavior has consequences. You would do well to remember that.”
Calvin stood frozen, watching the judge leave. His shoulders slumped. The fight was over, and we had lost everything. He had risked his career, his reputation, all for a justice that remained elusive. The bitter taste of defeat filled the air, heavy and suffocating.
