Chapter 2: B: The Double Dose Trap

#content-1

👉 Previous Decision: You chose Option B – Feign complete submission, hand over the notepad, and apply for the vacant Ward Supervisor role to gain higher security clearances.

“A wise choice, Nurse Barrett.” Dr. Silas Avery’s voice was almost a purr over the intercom. His eyes, cold and assessing, watched Clara through the decontamination chamber glass.

Clara carefully removed her small pocket notepad, a cheap spiral-bound book, and placed it onto the sterile tray. She tried to make her movements seem deliberate, compliant. She pushed it forward, a gesture of surrender.

“And your intentions to apply for Ward Supervisor,” Avery continued. “Commendable initiative.”

A nurse in full protective gear entered the chamber. She carried a specialized neural dampener, larger than the standard model. Two doses were prepared.

“Standard procedure, Nurse Barrett,” the nurse said, her voice muffled by her mask. “A more thorough sweep for new supervisor candidates. To ensure… loyalty.”

Clara’s breath hitched. She had anticipated the regular sweep, but not this. The first wave of neural dampening rolled over her, a warm, fuzzy sensation behind her temples, already blurring the edges of her recent memories.

The second wave hit harder. A jolt, then a profound blankness. She reached for a thought, a memory of the vault doors, the patients, the contract. It was all slipping away, like sand through her fingers. Her own name felt distant.

She saw Dr. Avery smile through the glass. He gestured, and the door to Sub-Level 4 opened. Clara stepped through, her mind a quiet, empty slate, ready for whatever instructions awaited her, whatever task she’d be assigned within the sealed ward.
