Arthur Pendelton returned to Kross & Bennet LLP, the grand Century City building still a beacon of quiet authority. He informed Samuel Kross of his decision: he would formally decline Eleanor’s inheritance.

“Are you certain, Mr. Pendelton?” Kross asked, his brow furrowed. “This is a substantial estate.”

“I am,” Arthur affirmed, his voice steady. He would not be used as a pawn in Marcus Holloway’s desperate game.

Kross presented a preliminary declination document. Arthur signed his name, the pen scratching faintly on the legal paper. The moment the document was logged into the firm’s system, Kross paused, a subtle shift in his demeanor.

He walked over to a heavy, fireproof safe built into the wall. With a series of precise turns, Kross unlocked it, revealing a small, internal compartment. From inside, he retrieved a sealed flash drive.

“Eleanor anticipated this possibility, Mr. Pendelton,” Kross said, handing Arthur the drive. “She left specific instructions for this eventuality.”

Arthur held the small device, his fingers tracing its smooth surface.

“This contains Eleanor Gable’s sworn videotaped deposition,” Kross explained. “Recorded six days before her death, under full oath, in the presence of an independent legal counsel.”

Kross then unsealed an envelope and pulled out a single sheet of paper. He cleared his throat and began to read aloud, his voice measured.

“Eleanor’s instructions state: ‘If Arthur refuses out of fear or modesty, reveal this sworn testimony to Marcus Holloway alone. Marcus is my neighbor, he ruined his own life through debt, and this estate is built to save him from himself, if he is brave enough to accept justice.’ ”

Arthur stood in stunned silence. The office hummed around him, but all he heard was Eleanor’s voice, echoing from the lawyer’s words. She had known. She had understood Marcus’s true motivations, his deep desperation. And she had built this inheritance not just for Arthur, but as a trap and a lifeline for Marcus.

The small flash drive felt heavy in his hand. It contained Eleanor’s final, profound message.

“What is the next step, Mr. Kross?” Arthur asked, his voice barely a whisper.

“The choice is now yours, Mr. Pendelton,” Kross said, meeting his gaze. “Eleanor’s contingency is clear.”
