The cold ceramic of the serving plate had shattered with a sickening crack against my temple. Blood warmed my cheek, a sticky track tracing its way towards my jaw, dripping onto the pristine linen tablecloth. Julian’s face, usually so expressive, was now a mask of chilling, almost serene, calm.

“911,” I choked out, thumb fumbling for the glowing screen of my phone. The line connected, and a distant, crackling voice cut through the stunned silence.

“Napa emergency. What’s your emergency?”

My voice trembled, a thin thread of sound against the oppressive stillness that had fallen over Julian’s sprawling dining room. No one moved. Elena Delacroix, Julian’s formidable mother-in-law, watched me with narrowed eyes, a faint, almost imperceptible smile playing on her lips. It was then, seeing their collective stillness, the calculated lack of shock from anyone at the table, that the first, brutal realization hit me.

This wasn’t an accident. This wasn’t Julian losing control in a moment of heated argument.

This was a performance. A deliberate, brutal show of force.

He had meant for the plate to connect. He had planned this exact impact, this exact display of dominance. The shock was not in his violence, but in his utter, chilling composure. My best friend. My Julian.

“I need immediate assistance at 1450 Silverado Trail,” I managed, my voice suddenly firmer, infused with a cold anger. “I’ve been assaulted. By Julian Drake.”

A low murmur rippled through the gathered celebrity guests, quickly stifled by Elena’s sharp, warning glance. Julian, who had been standing over me, took a casual step back. His eyes, usually so familiar, were now alien—cold, predatory, and entirely devoid of the warmth I had known for decades. He looked at me as if I were a problem to be solved, not a person bleeding in his dining room.

Just then, the heavy double doors, which Julian had locked moments before, burst open. Two hulking security guards, built like concrete walls, strode into the room. Their uniforms were sharp, their expressions blank, their movements synchronized.

“What’s going on here?” one of them rumbled, his gaze sweeping over me, then Julian, then Elena. It was a question asked for show, not for information.

The dispatcher’s voice crackled through the phone. “Ma’am, can you confirm the address and assailant?”

“Yes,” I said, holding Julian’s stare, refusing to look away. “Julian Drake. He hit me with a plate. And his security is now here. They just entered the room.”

Julian’s jaw tightened. He held my stare, a silent challenge in his eyes. His hand twitched, a barely perceptible signal, and one of the guards subtly shifted, positioning himself not to help, but to subtly block my path to the exit. It was orchestrated. Every terrifying second of it, from the shattering plate to the perfectly timed entrance of his muscle. This entire evening had been a meticulously planned ambush.

“Ma’am, we have units en route,” the dispatcher said, her voice tinged with professional urgency. “Are you in immediate danger right now?”

“Yes,” I whispered, not breaking eye contact with Julian, the man who had been my oldest friend. “I am.”

The guard took another step, a silent, menacing presence. The other one moved to stand beside Julian, forming a protective barrier. The message was clear: my call for help was noted, but I was still very much trapped in their territory. My world, already fractured by my mother’s death, was now irrevocably shattered.
