Chapter 12: True Ending

The cold metallic glint of the federal badge hit the icy porch floorboards with a sharp clatter. Lyle, the broad-shouldered hunter Evelyn had hired, had just grabbed my arm, ready to drag me into the blizzard. My heart hammered against my ribs.

His hand froze.

His eyes, which moments before had held a savage glint, widened, tracking the circular shield. The “U.S. DEPUTY MARSHAL” inscription, framed by the eagle, stood out against the swirling snow.

“What is that?” Evelyn’s voice, usually so smooth and commanding, fractured.

I lunged, my hand closing around the badge before Lyle could react. The cold metal felt grounding. I straightened, planting my feet on the porch. The wind whipped past, stinging my cheeks.

“It’s a federal warrant, Evelyn,” I said, my voice steady despite the tremor in my hands. I held the badge up, letting the faint light catch its surface. “For a full inspection of Caleb Holbrook’s estate.”

Lyle took a hesitant step back, his massive frame suddenly less imposing. His gaze flickered between the badge and Evelyn. He was a creature of the wilderness, used to local authority, but federal law was a different beast.

Evelyn’s cashmere-clad arm, which had been raised to point me off the property, dropped slowly. Her perfect, manicured nails dug into her palm. Her face, usually composed, twisted with a mixture of shock and fury.

“This is outrageous,” she hissed, recovering slightly. “You can’t just barge in here. This is private property.”

“It’s federal business, Evelyn,” I countered, pushing past her with a force that surprised even me. Her daughter, Chloe, gasped from behind her mother’s shoulder.

The grand entryway of my late father’s lodge, once a place of warmth and comfort, now felt like a battleground. I moved swiftly toward his private study, a room I knew Evelyn had kept locked since his death.

I tried the polished brass handle. Locked, just as I expected.

“Get out of my house!” Evelyn shrieked, her voice echoing off the high timber ceilings.

“This isn’t your house, Evelyn. Not yet.” I pulled a small, slim multi-tool from my work pants pocket. It was Caleb’s, a gift for my twelfth birthday. The familiar weight of it was a small comfort.

Lyle started to move forward again, his heavy boots thudding on the polished wood.

“Federal obstruction, Lyle,” I warned, not looking up as I expertly inserted a thin blade into the lock mechanism. “Think carefully.”

He hesitated again, caught between Evelyn’s rage and the clear threat of federal law.

With a soft click, the study door swung open. A wave of stale air, heavy with the scent of old books and Caleb’s pipe tobacco, washed over me. I stepped inside, turning just enough to block Evelyn and Lyle from entering immediately.

“I’ll be in here for a while,” I said, my gaze sweeping over the familiar, comforting chaos of Caleb’s study. “Don’t try anything foolish.”

I slammed the heavy oak door shut, the sound echoing through the vast lodge, and twisted the lock from the inside. The muffled shouts of Evelyn and Chloe began immediately, but for a moment, I was alone with my father’s memory and the urgent task ahead. My federal badge, the unexpected key to this standoff, lay heavy in my pocket. My actual mission, tracking black-market timber, was about to intersect violently with my family’s betrayal.
