Chapter 12: An Unwritten Tomorrow

My phone vibrated with an unfamiliar number. I had just finished scrubbing the last of the hardened grease from the commercial kitchen floor, my knees aching.

The screen lit up with a single, blurry photo. It showed a yellowed document, creased at the folds.

I saw my late husband, Tomás’s, name handwritten across the top. Below it, faded but clear, was the Koster Heritage Estate seal.

Then another message came, a short text from Mateo.

*Mom, I found it.*

*The registrar’s office. It’s real.*

Mateo arrived an hour later, slipping into my cramped basement room. The air was heavy with the smell of old concrete and a faint chemical residue from the cleaning supplies.

He sat on the edge of my cot, his shoulders slumped, but his eyes were bright with a fierce energy.

“Why didn’t you tell me, Mamá?” he asked, his voice low. He held up the photo I’d sent him. “About Abuelo Koster and Papa?”

I looked at the image. Tomás and old Mr. Koster, Julian’s father, had built this estate together, brick by brick, dream by dream. Julian, the current owner, saw only the gleaming facade, not the hands that had laid its foundation.

“Your father,” I began, my voice a whisper, “he didn’t want the trouble. He wanted peace.”

Mateo ran a hand through his dark hair. “Peace doesn’t pay for dignity, Mamá. Not anymore.”

He explained how he’d been digging through old county records, frustrated by Julian’s contempt. He’d found a reference to a 1994 partnership agreement, filed under a different, obscure property code.

“It says here,” Mateo pointed to a specific line on the blurred photo, “that my father, Tomás Morales, was a named 40% partner in the original estate trust. Not an employee, Mamá. A partner.”

My breath caught. Tomás had told me he’d been given a share, a “silent partnership,” but the papers had been lost in the fire at our old home years ago. I thought it was just a promise, a gesture of goodwill.

“Old Mr. Koster was having financial trouble back then,” Mateo continued, “The estate was close to foreclosure. Papa invested everything he had, saved it. This 40% was his payment.”

He pushed a lock of hair off my forehead. “And it’s yours now, Mamá.”

A loud, booming voice echoed from the top of the basement stairs. Julian.

“Morales!” he yelled, his words vibrating through the floorboards. “Who’s down there? I heard voices!”

Mateo froze, his hand still on my arm. He pulled his phone from his pocket.

“If you don’t leave my property immediately, I’m calling the police!” Julian threatened, his footsteps heavy above us. “You have no right to be here, Morales!”

Mateo glanced at me, his eyes wide with urgency. I nodded, a silent command. He couldn’t risk arrest now.

He squeezed my hand. “I’ll be back,” he whispered, then slipped out through the narrow basement exit, leaving me alone with the quiet hum of the old furnace and the weight of Julian’s looming presence.
