Trapped in a Recording Studio by Her Late Superstar Husband's Adult Stepdaughter and Family to Surrender $120M Catalog Rights, a Caretaking Manager Discovers Fate and Secrets Change Everything
Maya’s hand stayed at her side, not reaching for the pen. The contract lay on the polished mahogany table, a thick sheaf of papers detailing the surrender of everything Julian had left for their son, for her.
Chloe Montgomery, Julian’s 26-year-old daughter, stood opposite me. Her eyes were narrowed, a predatory gleam I hadn’t seen since Julian’s funeral.
“You really think I’m going to sign this, Chloe?” I asked, my voice steady despite the tremor in my hands. The heavy soundproofing of the room swallowed any outside noise, making her answer feel amplified.
“This isn’t a negotiation, Maya,” Chloe retorted, her voice hard. “This is an ultimatum. Sign, or I go to the press with everything.”
“Everything?” I raised an eyebrow. “What ‘everything’ could you possibly have that isn’t already a lie?”
Her lips thinned. “That you were a gold-digger who manipulated my father, that you drove him to an early grave, that you’re an unfit mother to your own son.”
A sharp intake of breath came from one of the cousins clustered behind Chloe, a young woman named Simone. Even they seemed uncomfortable with the sheer cruelty of the words.
“Julian and I were together for twenty years,” I said, my voice low. “I managed his tours, booked his sessions, ran his foundation. I was there when he collapsed, Chloe. I was there for him, always.”
“And look where that got him,” Chloe sneered. “Dead. And you, sitting on a fortune that belongs to the Montgomery legacy. To *us*.”
She gestured vaguely at the small group of relatives. Marcus Montgomery, Julian’s ambitious uncle, stepped forward, his arms crossed over a well-tailored suit jacket. He had always been keen on “the legacy” when it involved money, less so when it involved actual work.
“Chloe has every right to protect her father’s name, Maya,” Uncle Marcus said, his voice a low rumble. “And his assets. The family agrees.”
I looked from him to the other faces – Julian’s cousin, his sister-in-law. They averted their gaze, shuffling their feet. Fear, or complicity, kept them silent.
“You think this is a way to protect Julian’s name?” I asked, looking at Chloe. “By slandering his wife, the mother of his youngest child? Julian loved me. He trusted me. And he left me to care for our son.”
Chloe’s jaw tightened. “He was vulnerable. And you took advantage.”
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.” The words came out sharper than I intended. “You’re blinded by some fantasy of what Julian’s life was. You don’t know the first thing about what it took to keep this family, his career, his *life* together.”
Chloe took a step closer, her face flushed. “I know enough. And I know you’re not leaving this room until that document is signed.”
She nodded to Uncle Marcus. He walked to the heavy studio door, the same one that had clicked shut earlier. A deadbolt mechanism slid into place with a solid thunk. The sound echoed in the sudden silence.
He then pulled out a small, metallic panel from his pocket, about the size of a cellphone. He slid it into a slot beside the doorframe. A small red light blinked on.
“This room is now completely isolated, Maya,” Marcus said, a grim satisfaction in his voice. “No signals in or out. No sound, clearly. And no one can open this from the outside without the master override.”
The air grew heavy, thick with the scent of stale coffee and desperation. My heart hammered against my ribs. Chloe wasn’t just intimidating me; she was trapping me. She was determined to make me sign, using the very walls of Julian’s beloved studio as her cage.
“So what now, Chloe?” I asked, trying to keep my voice from trembling. “You’re going to hold me hostage?”
“We’re going to ensure the Montgomery legacy is protected,” she corrected, her gaze unwavering. “And you’ll cooperate.”
