71-Year-Old Physician Fights Untouchable Billionaire Friend After a Sick Toddler Exposes a Fake $50M Pregnancy Scam at a Hospital Gala
Julian Croft’s face was a mask of cold fury, his jaw tight as he stared at me across the plush private lounge. The remnants of the gala’s festive air still clung to the room, a cruel contrast to the tension now snapping between us.
His demand hung in the air: retract Chloe’s statement, brand a three-year-old a liar, or watch the Free Pediatric Clinic burn.
“I won’t do it, Julian,” I said, my voice steady, though my hands had begun to tremble imperceptibly. “That little girl needs care, not a public shaming.”
My gaze flickered to Chloe, still clutching the foam cushion, her face flushed with fever. Maria, her mother, held her protectively, tears starting to well in her eyes.
“We need an immediate medical evaluation of Beatrice, Julian. Right now.” I pushed away from the ornate table, the clink of silverware echoing my defiance. “Anything less is a cover-up.”
Julian’s eyes narrowed, a predatory gleam replacing the earlier charm. He pulled out his phone, his thumb already flying across the screen.
“Arthur, you’re making a grave mistake,” he hissed, not looking up. “You’ll regret this.”
A sharp notification pinged from his device. He lifted his head, a chilling smile touching his lips.
“Consider the pediatric charity account frozen. Effective immediately.” He slipped the phone back into his pocket with a decisive snap. “No funds for your ‘free’ clinic, no emergency care transfers, no new equipment.”
The words hit me like a physical blow. That account was the lifeline for countless children, fueled by his own supposed generosity.
“Julian, you can’t,” I started, but he cut me off.
“I just did.” He gestured vaguely toward the door. “Now, if you’ll excuse us, Beatrice and I have an announcement to make. A *real* announcement, I assure you.”
I turned to Maria. Her face was pale, her grip on Chloe tightening. Chloe whimpered, her fever clearly rising.
“Maria,” I said, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “We’re going to the ER. Right now. They’ll take care of Chloe.”
Julian watched us, his arms crossed, a smug expression settling on his face. The music from the ballroom seemed to swell, a triumphant fanfare for his cruelty. I steered Maria and Chloe past him, the chill of his presence following us out of the suite and into the bustling gala hallway.
