Chapter 2: The End of the Line

#content-1

👉 Previous Decision: You chose Option A – Press the gas pedal down to force the car through the fog end of the road.

Liem’s foot pressed hard against the accelerator, pushing the worn pedal all the way to the floor. The old Camry roared, its engine straining against an unseen force, gaining speed as if pulled by an invisible current into the dense, grey fog that marked the end of the ghostly boulevard.

The synchronized applause of the phantom pedestrians intensified, echoing from beyond the mist, a deafening sound that vibrated through the chassis.

The world outside the windshield dissolved into a swirling vortex of white and grey. A sudden, sharp crack echoed through the confined space. The car’s glass shattered inward, tiny fragments exploding without so much as a prick on Liem’s skin. The cold, damp air rushed in, filling his lungs with the smell of wet earth and something metallic.

He gripped the steering wheel, his knuckles white, but his hands moved without purpose. He tried to speak, to yell, but no sound escaped his throat. It was as if his voice had been stolen, replaced by the crushing pressure in his chest.

The speedometer needle flickered, then froze at an impossible speed.

The odometer on the dashboard, which had been ticking backward, spun wildly, the numbers a blur before settling on 000000. It remained there, a permanent, mocking zero.

Outside the shattered windows, the fog stretched endlessly, identical in every direction. The applause continued, a constant, taunting rhythm. The car, still moving at an impossible velocity, drove into the mist, then out, only to find itself back at the beginning of the same unending stretch of grey road.

Liem strained against the seatbelt, his body rigid, but he could not move. His eyes darted from the endless, looping road to the unmoving odometer, then back to the spectral figures in his peripheral vision. They stood just beyond the mist, their silver eyes reflecting his own trapped horror.

He was a silent observer in his own car, sealed behind an invisible barrier. The Camry became his eternal cage, driving him through a purgatory of perpetual motion, while on the true Bolsa Avenue, his son Kevin would soon claim the ancestral land, unchallenged, believing Liem had simply vanished, a coward running from his debts.
