Chapter 12: The Altar’s Gaze

I held my breath, the words Chloe spewed washing over me like the relentless rain outside. Her voice, sharp and cutting, detailed the immediate conservatorship papers she held.

She would have me declared mentally incompetent, she said, locked away if I didn’t sign over everything.

My eyes, however, stayed fixed on the loose wooden panel beneath the ancestral altar. The shadow, so recently a part of the wall, still hovered there, a dark finger pointing.

Chloe paced, her heels clicking on the polished floorboards. “You’re a danger to yourself, Martha. And to Julian. Look at you, clinging to these superstitions.”

My knees ached, a deep, burning throb. But a different kind of urgency now consumed me.

While she turned to emphasize a point about “Julian’s best interests,” I shifted. Just an inch. My fingers, numb from kneeling, twitched.

I eased them forward, toward the shadow-draped crevice. The wood was rough beneath my touch.

My fingertips slipped into the gap, exploring the dark space. It was tighter than I expected, but my skin brushed against something smooth and cold.

It was glass. A small, narrow vial, exactly as the shadow had indicated.

My heart hammered against my ribs. I closed my fingers around it, careful not to make a sound.

My thumb felt the slight curve of a cork stopper.

Then, my fingers brushed against paper. Folded, crisp.

Another quick, subtle movement, and both the vial and the paper were clutched in my palm, hidden by the folds of my simple dress sleeve.

Chloe turned back, her face flushed with her own tirade. “So, Martha. Are we going to be sensible, or are we going to call Dr. Peterson to escort you?”

Her eyes narrowed, but they didn’t quite settle on my hands. She saw only my quiet, stoic face.

“Good,” she said, nodding to herself. “Because Julian needs care, and you, frankly, need a rest. A long one.”
