Chapter 2: The Unsealed Dossier

#content-1

Evelyn stared at her phone screen, the words of ‘Cedar Creek Confessions’ blurring into an ugly mess. The anonymous post painted her as unhinged, a manipulator, the true cause of her first divorce. She squeezed her eyes shut, a hot flush spreading across her cheeks. The remnants of a tissue lay crumpled in her hand, evidence of a morning spent spiraling.

A soft knock at the door startled her. It was her father, Robert Reed, his presence a calm anchor in the churning storm.

He stepped inside, his gaze sweeping over her weary face. “Evie.”

His voice was steady, utterly devoid of judgment. He didn’t ask how she was, or offer platitudes. He simply moved, setting a small travel bag by the door.

He looked at the phone in her hand. “The blog post?”

Evelyn nodded, tears pricking her eyes again.

“Expected,” Robert said, his tone flat. He sat beside her, not touching, just a solid presence. “Eleanor doesn’t waste time.”

Evelyn finally looked up, confusion battling her despair. “Expected? Dad, how can you be so calm?”

Robert reached into his own travel bag. He pulled out a thick, legal-sized folder, worn at the edges. It was meticulously organized, bulging with papers.

“I didn’t want it to come to this,” he said, pushing the folder into her hands. “But Arthur has always been volatile. I started preparing months ago.”

He looked her straight in the eye. “A contingency.”

Evelyn stared at the label on the folder: **”Contingency: Arthur Cheney.”** Her breath caught. Her father had been compiling a dossier on her husband, her in-laws, for months, without a word.

What exactly had he uncovered in that time, and why had he kept such a profound secret from her?
