Chapter 20: Eleanor’s Reckoning

#content-1

Julian screamed. It was a guttural, terrifying sound that ripped through the control room, a primal shriek of pure, unadulterated terror. It was not the sound of pain, but of profound, existential horror. He dropped the ancestral idol as if it had suddenly become molten lead, clutching his head with both hands. The idol hit the mixing console with a soft thud, its golden light still pulsing, but now with a calmer, steady rhythm. The disorienting hum, which had built to an unbearable crescendo, immediately softened, receding into a faint, distant thrum.

Julian collapsed to the floor, writhing, his body jerking uncontrollably. His eyes were wide with terror, unfocused, staring at something only he could see. He thrashed, murmuring incoherently, his words a jumble of accusations and pleas.

“Lies… all lies!” he choked out, his voice hoarse. “Eleanor’s eyes! Get away from me! I didn’t… I didn’t mean to…”

He clawed at his face, as if trying to scratch away unseen visions. He gasped for breath, his chest heaving, his body convulsing on the pristine studio floor. He was utterly broken, his carefully constructed persona shattered into a thousand pieces. The specific, mundane personal cruelty of this moment was seeing the charismatic, controlled Julian reduced to a frantic, babbling mess, stripped bare of all his pretenses.

Serena, who had been pressed against the glass of the recording booth, watched in abject horror. Her face was ashen, her eyes wide with a mixture of terror and utter disbelief. She had witnessed Julian’s breakdown, the sudden, inexplicable shift from arrogant charm to writhing terror. She hadn’t understood the hum or the light, but she had seen *him*, a man utterly undone by some unseen force.

She looked from Julian’s convulsing form to the faintly glowing idol on the console, then to me, a silent question in her eyes. I offered her no answers, only a grim, unwavering stare. My gaze then swept over Mac, who sat frozen at the monitors, his face pale, but his fingers still on the recording button. He had captured it all.

“Serena,” I said, my voice low and steady, cutting through Julian’s moans. “Go. Get out of here. Call for help, but tell them he’s had a ‘medical emergency.’ Don’t touch him.”

She didn’t need to be told twice. With a final, terrified glance at Julian, Serena stumbled backward, then turned and fled the studio in a panic. The heavy soundproof door swung shut behind her, leaving only the fading echo of her hurried footsteps. She was gone, a traumatized witness, but a free one. She was Julian’s unwitting accomplice no longer.

I walked slowly towards Julian, who was still writhing, his murmurs growing more agitated. “Eleanor… you can’t… I needed it… it was mine…” He spoke of greed, of entitlement, of the very sins I knew he had committed. The idol, now a soft, golden ember on the console, seemed to listen, its serene carved face silently acknowledging his confession.

My eyes fell on Julian’s hand, which still clutched a corner of the crumpled contract he had meant for Serena. The irony was exquisite. He had tried to steal her voice, but instead, he had lost his own. The contract, meant to be his triumph, was now a meaningless scrap of paper, still clutched in a hand that trembled with fear.

The hum eventually faded completely, leaving a profound silence in its wake. The golden light within the ancestral idol also slowly dimmed, until it was once again a dark, inert piece of carved wood. Only Julian’s ragged breathing and occasional whimpers broke the silence. He lay there, broken, on the floor of Eleanor’s sacred space, seemingly overcome by some unseen force, by Eleanor’s reckoning.

The room felt cleansed, heavy with a new kind of peace. Eleanor, in her wisdom, had ensured that the truth would find its way out, that deceit would ultimately be met with a powerful, inexplicable justice. Julian’s public and professional life was over, destroyed not by a legal battle he could manipulate, but by a force he couldn’t comprehend. He was stripped bare, exposed, his lies consuming him from within.
