I called Samuel back. “Let’s go with the PR firm,” I told him. “I can’t let Marcus stall this indefinitely.”

“Are you certain, Arthur?” Samuel asked, a note of caution in his voice. “PR can be a double-edged sword, especially in Hollywood.”

“I’m certain,” I insisted. “Beatrice hated bullies. It’s what she would’ve wanted.”

Samuel connected me with ‘Image Resurgence,’ a firm known for its aggressive tactics and celebrity clients. Their lead publicist, a woman with sharp eyes and an even sharper suit, promised a swift counter-offensive.

“We’ll highlight Kincaid’s predatory nature, his history of exploiting artists,” she declared during our first meeting. “We’ll paint him as a corporate raider, not a creative partner.”

Within days, the media whirlwind began. Carefully crafted statements hit every major entertainment outlet. Articles appeared, exposing Marcus’s cutthroat business practices and speculating about his dubious claims on Beatrice’s estate. The narrative began to shift.

But the PR firm, eager for a knockout blow, went too far. In an attempt to justify why Beatrice would bypass family for an assistant, they leaked excerpts from Beatrice’s heavily redacted medical records. They intended to show her deep loneliness and reliance on Arthur, but the leaked information contained sensitive details about her battle with early-onset dementia in her final years.

The fallout was immediate and catastrophic. Marcus Kincaid’s legal team filed a massive defamation countersuit. They argued the leaks were a gross invasion of privacy, deliberately intended to smear Marcus by implying he was preying on a vulnerable elder, and that Arthur had allowed the release of confidential medical information from the estate. The court, outraged by the ethical breach, froze the entire estate again, this time indefinitely, pending the outcome of the defamation suit.

I watched a news report featuring Marcus, who, with a solemn expression, spoke about “protecting the dignity of a Hollywood icon from opportunistic vultures.” My face, Gaunt and stressed, flashed on screen next to his, with headlines like “Assistant’s PR Blunder Halts $45M Estate.”

I had traded one freeze for a much deeper, more damaging one. The PR firm quickly dropped me, citing “irreconcilable differences.” My financial situation was worse than ever, caught in a legal limbo of my own making.
