Chapter 3: Immediate Suspension

#content-1

👉 Previous Decision: You attempted to check your personal smart-home camera feed, but it was blocked, and Director Davenport confiscated your phone.

Davenport leaned closer, his voice dropping to a low, chilling whisper. “Your erratic behavior, the alleged ‘glitch’ call, now a clear breach of protocol. It’s a pattern, Maya.”

He straightened, pulling a small card from his pocket. “I’m revoking your console credentials, effective immediately.”

My breath caught in my throat. “You can’t,” I managed to say. “There’s an active situation.”

“There is no active situation,” he countered, his voice rising just enough to carry to the few other dispatchers on the night shift. He flashed the card at the nearby security camera, a quick, practiced motion. “There’s only a dispatcher who’s showing signs of severe shift fatigue and mental instability.”

A guard, a man named Henderson who usually joked about his golf game, appeared at Davenport’s side. Henderson avoided my gaze.

“You’re being escorted out,” Davenport said, his voice flat. “You’ll be unable to access any emergency logs or communicate with field officers.”

My fingers trembled as I pushed back from the console. The screen went dark as he remotely logged me out. I was cut off. Completely. The realization hit me like a physical blow.

“This is wrong, Harlan,” I said, my voice tight with controlled fury. “There’s something happening.”

He merely shook his head, a look of faux concern on his face. “Go home, Maya. Get some rest.”

Henderson put a hand on my arm, not roughly, but with an unmistakable firmness. I let him guide me away from the glowing screens, away from the only place I could have helped Leo.
