He needs the firm’s safety net more than you do, Julian, my father declared across the formal dinner table, cutting my monthly commission allocation by $14,500 to pay my ex-partner Marcus’s luxur...
The next morning, the office felt different. The air was thick with unspoken tension, a nervous energy that vibrated beneath the surface of polite morning greetings. I was in my office, preparing a preliminary report based on Evelyn’s findings, the fraudulent ledgers still fresh in my mind.
Suddenly, the heavy oak door creaked open. Two impeccably dressed men, one holding a slim briefcase, stood in the frame. They weren’t clients.
“Julian Brooks?” the first man asked, his voice flat and professional.
I looked up from my desk. “Yes?”
He stepped forward, extending a stack of documents. “You’ve been served.”
My hand instinctively reached out, accepting the thick packet of papers. The top page screamed “CEASE AND DESIST” in bold, black letters. My eyes darted to the next line: “Brooks Asset Management vs. Julian Brooks.”
Marcus Kincaid emerged from behind the men, a smirk playing on his lips. He leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed, the picture of casual menace.
“Considering your recent… enthusiasm for auditing,” Marcus began, his voice dripping with condescension, “we thought it best to remind you of your contractual obligations.”
I flipped through the papers, my heart hammering against my ribs. A non-compete injunction, demanding $5.8 million in damages if I were to leave the firm or solicit clients. A legal freeze order on my personal assets.
My gaze landed on a paragraph about corporate non-disclosure agreements. It threatened immediate bankruptcy and criminal slander countersuits for any breach of confidentiality.
“This is ridiculous,” I snapped, my voice rising. “You can’t just–”
“Oh, but I can,” Marcus interrupted, pushing off the doorframe. He took a step into the room, his eyes hard. “Brooks Asset Management, as per its founding documents, has every right to protect its intellectual property and client relationships.”
He gestured vaguely at the documents in my hand. “That’s a $5.8 million bill, Julian. Just for daring to look where you don’t belong.”
A cold sweat pricked my skin. This wasn’t just an empty threat. Marcus was trying to financially cripple me, to silence me before I could expose him.
“You really think this will stop me?” I asked, my voice trembling with contained fury.
Marcus chuckled, a hollow sound. “It will make you think twice about who you tell your little stories to. Break confidentiality, Julian, and you’ll lose everything.”
He turned on his heel, leaving me alone with the thick packet of legal threats, the door closing with a soft, final click. The weight of the papers in my hand felt unbearable.
