👉 Previous decision: You chose Option B – Pretend complete compliance and pursue a rapid management promotion to access higher security clearance.
The fluorescent lights of the Severance Floor hummed, reflecting off the polished chrome desks. I walked with a confident stride, a practiced smile on my face. My plan was simple: play the loyal employee, request a promotion, and gain access to the higher-security zones of Apex Celebrity Media. I found Julian Kincaid in his corner office, a panoramic view of downtown Los Angeles stretched behind him.
“Julian, I’d like to discuss my career trajectory,” I began, pitching my voice with just the right amount of ambition. “I feel I’m ready for greater responsibility, a managerial role perhaps.”
Julian swiveled his chair to face me, a faint smirk playing on his lips. “Ambitious, Ethan. I like that.” His eyes, however, seemed to bore into mine, searching.
“I’ve been excelling at my tasks, adapting to the protocols,” I continued, trying to keep my posture relaxed. “I believe I can contribute more at a higher level.”
He stood, walking slowly around his desk. The room suddenly felt colder. “You’ve been adapting, yes,” he said, his voice low. “But adaptation can sometimes be a mask, can’t it?”
My breath hitched. “What do you mean?”
He stopped in front of me, his gaze unwavering. “I mean, sometimes people try to play a game they don’t understand. They try to outwit a system designed to be un-outwittable.”
A cold dread coiled in my gut. He knew.
“You’ve seemed… distracted lately, Ethan,” Julian said, his smile now completely gone. “A little too eager for information you shouldn’t need. A little too curious about things that are best left forgotten.”
Before I could form a protest, he pressed a button on a small panel embedded in his desk. The office door hissed shut, sealing us in. A soft, high-frequency hum filled the air, barely perceptible.
“It’s a shame,” Julian said, picking up a sleek, metallic device from a hidden compartment. It looked like a specialized neural stimulator, far more advanced than the daily memory wipe apparatus. “You had potential. But curiosity, as they say, kills the cat.”
I backed away, stumbling over my own feet. “Julian, please. I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
He took a step towards me, the device glinting in his hand. “Oh, you will. You just won’t remember.”
The device whirred to life. A high-pitched tone assaulted my ears, followed by a blinding flash of light that erased everything. All the questions, all the suspicions, all the memories of the last few weeks—gone. My mind felt like a freshly wiped slate, clean and empty. The corporate protocols were absolute.
