Chapter 4: Frost On the Mantle

#content-1

The temperature outside plummeted to 18°F. Arthur stoked the small kerosene heater in his living room, watching the flame dance. His daughter, Eleanor, arrived unannounced, her face etched with worry and frustration. She stomped her feet on the welcome mat, shedding snowflakes.

“Dad, what is this?” Eleanor demanded, her voice tight. “The news, the house, the cold. Just sell it. Move in with us.”

Arthur shook his head, a stubborn line setting his jaw. “I’m not selling, Eleanor. Not to him.”

“He’s destroying your reputation!” she insisted, her arms crossed against her chest. “They’re calling you a corrupt old man.”

“It’s a lie,” Arthur said, his voice quiet but firm. “Just like these utility cuts.”

He showed her the notice Chloe had managed to dig up from the city’s obscure permit archives. It authorized an “emergency utility repair” for the entire block, specifically citing a non-existent gas leak on Pine Street. Harrison Croft’s name was prominently displayed as the requesting party.

Eleanor stared at the document, her breath hitching. “He *orchestrated* this? Four days without heat?”

“And more,” Arthur said, rubbing his temples. “He’s systematically trying to isolate me, financially and socially.”

Eleanor paced, her boots thudding softly on the wooden floor. She ran a hand through her hair. “But why? What does he gain from all of this?”

“Power, my dear,” Arthur replied, gesturing around the cold room. “And a very valuable piece of land.”

Eleanor looked at him, then at the flickering heater. Her shoulders sagged. “He’s trying to break you, isn’t he?”

Arthur only gazed into the orange glow of the heater, the silence a heavy answer.
