Chapter 4: The Coded Name Appears

#content-1

The memory of “the arrangement” on Marco’s tablet screen lingered, a nagging question mark in my mind. We walked on eggshells around him, watching his every move, but he was more careful now, his tablet always locked, always within reach. It was a suffocating game of cat and mouse, and I felt like we were losing ground.

Days crawled by, filled with the usual rhythm of the bakery, but underneath, a current of tension pulsed. My parents continued to trust Marco implicitly, their relief at his “protection” blinding them to his guarded behavior. This deepened the sense of injustice within me.

Then, a few days later, fate, or perhaps Marco’s overconfidence, offered another glimpse.

He was making coffee in the kitchen, his back to Sofia, who was at the table doing homework.

His tablet, inexplicably, lay on the counter, again unlocked.

Perhaps he’d been distracted by a call, or a thought, his guard momentarily down.

Sofia, with her usual subtle movements, reached for a pen.

Her eyes flicked to the tablet.

Her hand moved almost imperceptibly, pushing a book aside, clearing her line of sight.

She was so good at appearing innocent, utterly absorbed in her studies.

On the screen, the same encrypted chat app was open.

This time, a name stood out, repeated several times in the message fragments: “El Halcón.”

A specific, coded name, not a phrase.

Sofia’s fingers moved like lightning.

With a practiced ease I wouldn’t have even known she possessed, she pulled out her phone and snapped a quick screenshot of the tablet screen.

The flash was barely a whisper of light.

She tucked her phone back into her pocket an instant before Marco turned around.

He picked up his tablet, scanning the screen quickly before locking it and heading out the door for “business calls.”

He didn’t notice a thing.

Sofia waited until he was gone, the sound of his car fading into the street.

Then she came to me, her face a mixture of excitement and fear.

“Mom, look,” she whispered, her eyes wide.

She showed me her phone, the screenshot clear on the display.

There it was, repeated several times in the brief message snippets: “El Halcón.”

Below it, fragmented sentences like “…the terms from El Halcón…” and “…waiting for El Halcón’s approval…”

My breath hitched in my throat. This was a new level of secrecy, a new layer to Marco’s deception.

“El Halcón?” I murmured, the name feeling strange and dangerous on my tongue.

“What do you think it means?” Sofia asked, her voice hushed.

I shook my head, completely baffled.

“I have no idea, mija. It sounds… like a code name.”

A shiver went down my spine. The image of a hawk, a predator, flashed in my mind.

“It’s not like any name I’ve heard around here,” she added.

“And it was in that same weird chat app.”

The burner app, the coded name – it confirmed Marco wasn’t just doing shady business. He was dealing with people who used aliases, who communicated in fragments and code.

This was far beyond the realm of “business maneuvers” he’d described to my parents.

This was something darker, something more clandestine.

I felt a cold dread settle in my stomach.

My brother, Marco, was not just outsmarting us.

He was aligning himself with forces I couldn’t begin to comprehend.

He was using these shadowy connections for his own gain, at the expense of our family.

The personal cruelty of his actions, not just in deceiving our parents but in endangering us all by his secret dealings, felt sharp and immediate.

He was treating our family’s future like a pawn in a game he thought only he understood.

“This is big, Mom,” Sofia said, her voice barely a whisper.

“This feels really bad.”

I hugged her tightly, the small, specific screenshot a tangible piece of our growing nightmare.

“You did amazing, Sofia,” I told her, trying to infuse my voice with strength I didn’t entirely feel.

“This is important.”

The name “El Halcón” hung in the air between us, a new, unsettling piece of a puzzle we were only just beginning to assemble.

Its meaning was entirely lost on us, but its presence felt menacing.

It was a stark reminder of how little we truly knew about Marco’s world, and how deeply he was entangled.

I looked at the image on Sofia’s phone, the cryptic name a stark contrast to the familiar warmth of our kitchen.

This was not a simple developer. This was not a simple business deal.

This was something far more intricate, far more dangerous, than anything I had anticipated.

And Marco was at the center of it, a willing participant in whatever “arrangement” involved “El Halcón.”

My mind raced, trying to connect the dots, but the pieces felt disparate, menacing.

The bakery, my parents, Marco’s greed, and now this coded figure.

I knew one thing for certain: we couldn’t stop now.

We had to uncover what “El Halcón” truly meant, before Marco’s schemes consumed us all.

The screenshot became our secret, a digital whisper of a hidden danger.
