Chapter 13: Five Years in the Cold

Two days later, the cabin door creaked open, letting in a gust of frigid air and a man in a tweed jacket that looked far too thin for the mountain winter. He introduced himself as Donald Finch, a land appraiser from the next county over, his breath pluming in the cold cabin.

“Heard about your family’s financial… difficulties, Caleb,” Finch said, setting a worn leather briefcase on my small table. “I thought I’d offer my services. Expedited mediation. A new, quick valuation for the timber rights. Get things moving again.”

He smiled, a professional, reassuring smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. He presented me with a sheaf of documents: timber yield assessments, land valuation reports, market comparisons.

I took them, my hands still cold. “I appreciate the offer, Mr. Finch. I’m a surveyor myself, you know. Timber auditor.”

His smile faltered for a split second. “Ah, yes. Of course. Excellent then. You’ll understand the complexities.”

I moved to the flickering lantern light, my professional instincts kicking in despite the swirling confusion in my head. I began to review the documents, my trained eye scanning for familiar patterns, for the precise language of the land.

The first anomaly was subtle: a timber yield calculation for a specific quadrant that seemed inflated. I’d walked that quadrant myself last summer. The projected harvest volumes were at least 15% higher than what was physically present.

The second was a discrepancy in the market comparisons. Finch had used prices from a coastal region, not the landlocked valley with its unique logistical challenges. The valuation was artificially high, by almost twenty-five percent.

I tapped a finger on the page. “These numbers… they don’t quite align with the local market, Mr. Finch. And this yield here, for the north slope. It’s optimistic, to say the least.”

Finch cleared his throat. “Just aggressive forecasting, Mr. Croft. Standard practice to show maximum potential for new investors.” He shifted in his seat, his gaze flicking to the far corner of the cabin, almost as if he was checking if someone else was listening.

Then came the third, chilling detail. A small, almost unnoticeable typo in a property description, a single letter transposed. But that typo referenced a specific prior sale. A sale in Oregon.

And then Finch spoke, too quickly, too casually. “Elena was quite insistent on getting these expedited. She mentioned needing them for her previous… dealings. In Oregon.” He caught himself, a nervous tic working at the corner of his eye. “Her maiden name. She used her maiden name for those, I believe.”

My blood ran cold. Elena. Her maiden name. A name I knew, but had never heard him utter. My wife had always been fiercely private about her past, especially her life before we met.

Finch quickly gathered his papers, his face now a mask of forced politeness. “Well, I’ll leave these with you. Think about my offer. The storm isn’t getting any better, and time is money.”

He backed out of the cabin, leaving me with the documents, the cold air, and the chilling realization that Donald Finch, the seemingly neutral mediator, knew more about Elena’s hidden past than he let on. And that past had just walked directly into my present.
