Chapter 9: A New Dawn, A Familiar Ache

The phone rang, cutting through the tense silence of my living room. It was Thomas. My heart hammered against my ribs; I knew this call would be important.

“Evelyn, I just had a… fascinating conversation with Arthur,” Thomas began, his voice dry. “He just got served with the asset freeze and discovery request. He was, to put it mildly, incandescent.”

A grim satisfaction settled over me. “I imagine so. What did he say?”

“Oh, the usual bluster,” Thomas chuckled, a dark humor in his tone. “Accusations of paranoia, gold-digging, emotional instability. Said you were ‘clearly cracking under the strain’ of his ‘serious illness’.”

“And you believed him, of course,” I said, rolling my eyes.

“Hardly,” Thomas replied. “But then, he got arrogant. Really arrogant. Started boasting about how you’d never prove anything, because he had ‘legitimate’ reasons for everything. Said his ‘cutting-edge Lyme specialist’ could vouch for his every move, every expense. Apparently, he’s been receiving ‘revolutionary treatment’ at the ‘Canyon Vista Wellness Center’ in Sedona, Arizona. Even gave me the doctor’s name, Dr. Elias Thorne, and the exact dates he was supposedly there for intensive therapy.”

My breath hitched. Canyon Vista Wellness Center. Dr. Elias Thorne. This was the lead Brenda had hinted at, delivered straight from Arthur’s own arrogant mouth. He’d given us the rope he was about to hang himself with.

“He gave you the name?” I repeated, disbelieving. “He just… offered it up?”

“Like candy to a baby, Evelyn,” Thomas confirmed. “He thought he was being clever, laying a false trail, confident that a specialized clinic like that would just confirm his story without question. He thinks he’s untouchable, that his charm and his ‘illness’ will protect him.”

“He’s wrong,” I stated, a cold resolve settling deep within me.

“He is,” Thomas agreed. “My team is already on it. We’re preparing a subpoena for his medical records from Canyon Vista Wellness Center and any other physicians he’s seen in the last five years. We’ll have it filed by end of day. This Dr. Thorne, if he exists, will have to provide records.”

The thought of those records, of undeniable proof, sent a shiver through me. The truth was within reach.

“Thank you, Thomas,” I said, the words heavy with emotion. “Thank you for believing me.”

“Always, Ev,” he replied. “Now, just try to keep your head down. Arthur’s going to be fuming. He might try to escalate his pressure tactics.”

He was right. Arthur’s wrath was predictable.

A few hours later, I received a text from Brenda.

“We need to talk. Can you meet me at the park near Sarah’s apartment? Noon tomorrow? Arthur’s getting really scary.”

The next day, as I approached the park, I saw Brenda pacing near a children’s playground, her hands clasped tightly in front of her. She looked even more strained than before, her eyes darting nervously around.

“Brenda, what’s wrong?” I asked, my voice soft.

She pulled me towards a secluded bench, away from the path. “It’s Arthur. He’s been a monster since he got those papers. He’s yelling at Sarah constantly, accusing her of betraying him, of talking to you. He even threatened her.”

“Threatened her? How?” My voice was barely a whisper.

“He said if she didn’t ‘keep her mouth shut’ and ‘follow his lead,’ she’d lose everything. Her apartment, the shell company, all the money he promised her. He said he’d make sure she looked like the mastermind if things went sideways. He’s turning on her, Evelyn.”

A wave of dread washed over me. This was the Arthur I knew, amplified. The man who cared only for himself.

“He’s cornering her,” Brenda continued, her voice trembling. “He’s making her sign new documents, quick. I’ve seen them, they’re complex. He says it’s to ‘protect their assets’ from your ‘malicious’ lawsuit, but I have a bad feeling about it. She’s terrified.”

“And what about his ‘Lyme’ story?” I pressed, wanting to gauge Sarah’s current understanding.

Brenda shook her head. “That’s what’s really bothering me. He’s always been vague about it with Sarah. Said it was a ‘private medical issue’ he didn’t want to burden her with. But now, with all this financial stuff, he’s suddenly talking about his ‘life-threatening condition’ more often, using it to justify why he needs Sarah to sign things quickly, why they need to hide assets.”

“It always felt fabricated, didn’t it?” I observed.

“Yeah,” Brenda admitted, her gaze distant. “He never had any symptoms that I could see. No fatigue, no joint pain, nothing. He was always full of energy, always traveling, always busy. He’d just disappear for days, claiming he was at a ‘specialist’ or on a ‘wellness retreat.’ But he always came back looking tanned and relaxed, not like someone undergoing aggressive medical treatment.”

“So, you never saw any proof? Any hospital visits, prescriptions, doctor’s notes?”

Brenda hesitated. “No. Never. I asked Sarah once, playfully, if she’d met his ‘mysterious doctor.’ She got defensive, said Arthur valued his privacy. But now… now I see it. It was always a story, a convenient excuse for his absences. And now he’s using it to bully Sarah.”

The raw emotion in Brenda’s voice convinced me. She wasn’t just suspicious; she was genuinely afraid for her sister. Arthur’s web of lies was not only entangling me but also slowly suffocating Sarah.

“Thomas has subpoenaed his medical records from a specific clinic Arthur mentioned, the ‘Canyon Vista Wellness Center’ in Arizona, and from any other doctors he’s seen in the past five years,” I told Brenda, watching her reaction carefully.

Brenda’s eyes widened. “He actually named a place? He’s never done that before. That’s… that’s unlike him. He’s usually so careful.”

“He was feeling supremely confident,” I explained, a bitter taste in my mouth. “He thought it would prove his story.”

“I hope those records come back clean,” Brenda whispered, almost to herself. “For Sarah’s sake. If he’s really faking a terminal illness… that’s a whole new level of monster.”

“It is,” I agreed, feeling a cold knot form in my stomach. “It’s cruel and calculated. And I have a feeling those records won’t show what Arthur expects.”

Brenda looked at me, her expression a mix of fear and growing certainty. “You know, there’s something else. Arthur had a primary care physician, a Dr. Miller, here in town, for years. He always just went for routine check-ups. Never mentioned any complex illnesses to her. Maybe… maybe her records would be more telling.”

Another lead. A concrete name, a local doctor. This was even better than the potentially fake specialist Arthur had given.

“Dr. Miller,” I repeated, committing the name to memory. “Thank you, Brenda. This is incredibly helpful.”

Brenda nodded, but her gaze was still troubled. “Just be careful, Evelyn. Arthur is a cornered rat. And a cornered rat is dangerous. He’s not above trying to hurt you if he thinks it’ll protect him.”

Her words echoed the warning from the anonymous message. “Watch your back.” The stakes were escalating rapidly. Arthur wasn’t just committing fraud; he was manipulating, threatening, and now, openly bullying Sarah. But his arrogance, his unwavering belief in his own invincibility, had led him to make a critical error. He had provided the key to his undoing. And with Brenda’s help, we had another, potentially even more damning, avenue to explore. The truth was a tangible thing, waiting to be unearthed, and I was closer than ever to holding it in my hands. The doctor’s secret was about to be revealed, and with it, the undeniable proof of Arthur’s monumental deception.
