The Midnight Inheritance: How My Business Partner Framed Me at the Vanderbilt Gala
👉 Previous Decision: You chose to try to argue your innocence with the security chief.
The security chief, a burly man with a clipped mustache, listened impassively as Julian recounted Marcus’s true motives. “He planted it, Chief. Marcus wants Arthur’s $120 million estate. He framed me.”
The chief tapped a pen against his clipboard. “Motives, Mr. O’Connell, are for lawyers. Evidence is for us.”
Just then, Marcus strolled into the study, a triumphant glint in his eyes. He carried a leather-bound folder. “Chief,” he said smoothly, “I regret to inform you that Julian has been in severe personal debt for years.”
He laid out several documents on the chief’s desk: bank statements, loan agreements, a precise record of $42,000 in medical bills for Nora, Julian’s sister, meticulously paid off by Julian over the past decade. Each paper bore Julian’s signature.
“His sister’s medical debts,” Marcus explained, a feigned sigh. “A tragic situation. But perhaps, a compelling motive.”
The security chief looked from the documents to Julian, then back. The narrative was clear, powerful, and deeply damning. The chief nodded slowly.
“We have a weapon, a sheath in your possession, and a strong financial motive, Mr. O’Connell,” he stated, his voice devoid of sympathy. “The police will be here shortly to take you into custody.”
Julian protested, demanding they test the blade, but his words fell on deaf ears. Marcus had carefully built a case that made sense on paper, one that police would easily accept. They never even bothered to check for the neurotoxin.
Clara watched from the doorway, her face streaked with tears, a look of profound heartbreak in her eyes. The trust Julian had tried so hard to build shattered in an instant. She believed Marcus’s lies.
Julian was led away in handcuffs, his investigator’s license revoked, his reputation ruined. He spent years in legal appeals, imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit, never uncovering the true depth of Marcus’s conspiracy, and forever cut off from Clara.
