My Mother Managed My Hollywood Career While Enabling My Husband’s Affair in My Home — An Expired 2014 Contract Clause Destroyed Her Entire Agency
The doorbell chimed precisely at 10:00 AM. I was still dressed in a simple t-shirt and yoga pants, a stark contrast to the perfectly tailored suits of the three men standing on my doorstep. Two network executives, Mr. Davies from legal and Mr. Thompson from production, flanked by Eleanor, who was radiating an almost sickly sweet concern.
Eleanor stepped forward, her hand extending towards me, as if to steady me. I pulled back before she could touch my arm. Her hand dropped to her side, her smile tightening.
“Maya, darling, we’re all very concerned,” Eleanor began, her voice dripping with the same artificial sympathy she’d displayed on television.
Mr. Davies, a man whose face was usually impassive, looked grim. He held a thick folder in his hand.
“Ms. Sorenson,” he said, his voice flat and official, “due to recent media reports regarding your… mental health and the alleged high-risk nature of your pregnancy, the network is forced to take action.”
My jaw tightened. They were using Eleanor’s carefully planted stories.
“We have serious concerns about the stability of the production,” Mr. Thompson added, adjusting his tie. “Our investors, our sponsors… they’re all calling. The perception of instability, even if unproven, creates an unmanageable risk for a $60,000,000 show.”
Mr. Davies opened his folder. “Therefore, effective immediately, under Article 7, Subsection C of your talent contract – the standard morality and health clause – your acting contract is frozen. Your weekly salary of $250,000 will be suspended.”
The words hung in the air, cold and definitive. Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars, gone. Just like that.
Eleanor stepped forward again, placing a hand on Mr. Davies’ arm. “Don’t worry, gentlemen. I assure you, I will handle Maya’s care personally. I’ll make sure she gets all the medical and emotional support she needs. Her well-being is my paramount concern, and of course, ensuring the smooth continuation of the series is always our goal.”
She offered them a saccharine smile, a perfect picture of a devoted mother and a responsible manager. The executives exchanged a look, a subtle nod of approval. They wanted problems to disappear, and Eleanor was promising to make me disappear.
“We appreciate your dedication, Eleanor,” Mr. Davies said, relief evident in his voice. “We trust you to manage this delicate situation. We’ll be in touch regarding the next steps for the series.”
With that, they turned and walked out, leaving me alone with Eleanor in the vast, suddenly silent foyer. The front door clicked shut, severing my connection to my entire professional life.
Eleanor turned to me, her face losing its sympathetic mask, replaced by a calculating stare. “See, Maya? This is what happens when you make things difficult. They don’t care about your feelings. They care about their bottom line.”
She adjusted the cuff of her blouse. “Now, you’re going to relax. You’re going to rest. And I’m going to take care of everything.”
Her words weren’t a comfort. They were a threat. She had isolated me. Cut off my income. Framed me as unstable. She was stripping away my life, piece by piece, and presenting it as protection.
I stood rooted to the spot, watching her turn and walk towards the kitchen, already making a phone call, no doubt solidifying her new control. The weight of her betrayal pressed down on me, heavy and suffocating.
