Chapter 10: Shadow of a Legacy

Dr. Reed’s words had ignited a spark of desperate hope within me. Her academic theories, though still cautious, provided a framework for my bewildering reality. She suggested we start with my family’s direct history, looking for any heirloom or document that might reference a lineage burden.

I returned home, no longer overwhelmed by the task, but with a new sense of purpose. Shadow seemed to sense it, its spectral form a constant, comforting presence as I methodically searched. I began in the attic, sifting through generations of accumulated dust and memories. Old trunks, forgotten photographs, yellowed letters—each was examined with meticulous care.

Hours turned into days. My back ached, my eyes strained, but I pushed on. My mind kept returning to Dr. Reed’s description of “ancestral pacts” and “protective relics.” Where would a family hide such a secret?

It was in my great-grandmother’s antique bible, tucked away on a high shelf in the den. The leather was worn smooth, the pages brittle with age. It had always been there, a silent sentinel, but I had never thought to truly examine it.

As I opened it, a faint, almost floral scent wafted out, a memory of my great-grandmother. Her elegant handwriting filled the margins. I ran my fingers over the pages, feeling the texture of the old paper. Then, my fingers brushed against a subtle ridge along the spine.

A hidden compartment.

My heart pounded. With trembling hands, I carefully prised it open. Inside, nestled among dried flowers, was a single, faded, brittle letter. The ink was almost entirely bled into the paper, but the elegant script was still discernible. It was old, very old.

I pulled it out, feeling the fragility of its age. As I unfolded it, the paper crackled, threatening to disintegrate. I could just make out the date, etched lightly at the top: November 12, 1898.

I began to read, the words a blurry dance on the page: “My dearest Arthur…” (It was addressed to my great-grandfather, also named Arthur.) “…I write this with a heavy heart, to warn you of a dormant shame within the Finch family… a betrayal of trust that echoes through generations. They sought to possess what was not theirs, the Heartstone, and in their greed, they awakened an old pact… a corresponding echoing blight that affects their line when the covenant is disturbed…”

My hand shook, the letter rustling. Twist 5. The Finch family. A dormant shame. The Heartstone. An echoing blight. It all converged.

I immediately called Dr. Reed. Her voice was calm and academic until I relayed the contents of the letter. Then, a sharp intake of breath on the other end.

“I’ll be right over, Mr. Caldwell. Don’t touch another thing.”

She arrived within twenty minutes, armed with gloves and a magnifying glass. Her movements were precise, respectful of the letter’s age. She carefully spread it on my dining table, her brow furrowed in concentration.

“This is extraordinary,” she murmured, tracing a finger along a faded line.

“A direct reference to the Heartstone, to a Finch family betrayal… and an ‘echoing blight.'”

“What does it mean, Dr. Reed?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

“The ‘echoing blight’ suggests a reactive curse,” she explained, her eyes scanning the text.

“A consequence for disrupting the pact. It implies that when the Caldwell lineage, as guardians, is threatened or a sacred element of the pact is violated, the Finch family suffers a reciprocal misfortune.”

“A reciprocal misfortune?” I repeated, trying to grasp the full implications.

“Yes. A mirror consequence. If they sought to steal the Heartstone, perhaps their prosperity was linked to their respect for the pact. A violation would then lead to their downfall.”

“And the ‘dormant shame’?”

“A past transgression, clearly. Something they’ve tried to bury, perhaps for generations. This letter implies their actions directly provoked the ‘blight’ on their own family in the past, and it could happen again if they disturb the covenant.”

We spent hours poring over the letter, deciphering faded phrases, piecing together the fragmented narrative. It spoke of Finch ancestors, driven by greed, attempting to seize the Heartstone, believing its power could be exploited for their own gain. It described a desperate struggle, and then, a sudden, devastating reversal of fortune for the Finch family, which the letter attributed to the “blight.”

Dr. Reed looked up, her expression a mix of awe and grim understanding.

“This isn’t just folklore anymore, Arthur,” she said, using my first name for the first time.

“This is a documented history of an ancient, potent magic. And it directly implicates Alistair’s lineage.”

A chill ran down my spine. Alistair’s disdain, his public attack on my cane, his insidious smear campaign—it wasn’t just snobbery. It was tied to this ancient, dangerous rivalry. He knew something, or at least his family lore did.

“But who could reactivate such a curse?” I asked, a dawning dread settling in my stomach.

“Who would even remember this old pact, let alone disturb it?”

Dr. Reed’s eyes met mine, wide with revelation.

“Someone with a deep-seated connection to that ‘dormant shame,’ Arthur. Someone who might still harbor the same ambition as their ancestors.”

Her gaze seemed to connect the dots to the present, to Alistair Finch. The realization settled between us, cold and undeniable. The past wasn’t buried; it was echoing in the present, fueled by the very man who sought to destroy my family. The pact was indeed being disturbed, and the consequences, according to this fragile letter, were dire.

At my daughter's wedding, her father-in-law attacked my cane, then a phantom dog defended me, revealing a truth about my past.
