Chapter 4: The Unaffordable Loan

#content-1

Ben’s call came late in the evening, his voice tight with suppressed urgency. He asked Aris to meet him in his office after hours, citing “something important” that couldn’t be discussed over the phone. The request alone sent a chill down Aris’s spine; Ben, ever the stickler for rules, only circumvented protocol when the stakes were truly high.

The hospital hallways were eerily quiet, the usual bustling energy replaced by a hushed, almost spectral stillness. Aris felt like a ghost haunting the place she once commanded. She let herself into Ben’s office, the air smelling faintly of stale coffee and antiseptic. Ben was hunched over his computer, the glow of the screen illuminating his troubled face.

He didn’t greet her with his usual affability. He simply gestured to the chair opposite his desk, his eyes darting between her and the screen. The seriousness in his demeanor was palpable, heavier than any skepticism he had shown before.

“I’ve been looking into Lena, like you asked,” Ben said, his voice flat. He turned the monitor slightly so Aris could see. A series of web pages, mostly financial, filled the screen. “It was harder than I thought. She’s good at covering her tracks, but I found something.”

Aris leaned forward, her heart thumping against her ribs. The screens showed a labyrinth of financial records, public filings, and obscure lending institutions. Ben pointed to a specific document, highlighted in yellow. It was a loan agreement.

“This came through about three months ago,” Ben explained, tapping the screen. “A private loan. From a place called ‘Capital Holdings Group.’ Never heard of them, they’re barely registered.”

Aris squinted at the screen. The numbers jumped out at her, stark and unbelievable. The principal amount was listed as $285,000. Her breath hitched. That was a staggering sum for a resident, even a senior one like Lena.

“Lena’s salary, even with her recent promotion, doesn’t come close to supporting a loan like this,” Ben continued, his voice grim. “Especially not with these terms.” He scrolled down, revealing the repayment schedule. “High interest rate, aggressive payments. It looks like she’s on the hook for nearly six thousand dollars a month for the next five years. That’s almost her entire take-home pay.”

A cold dread settled over Aris. She knew Lena’s financial situation wasn’t extravagant. Lena lived comfortably, but not ostentatiously. This loan, this massive, unaffordable debt, was a shocking revelation. It painted a picture of desperation, a motive far beyond simple professional ambition.

“Why would she take out a loan like this?” Aris whispered, her voice hoarse. The question hung in the air, heavy with unspoken implications.

Ben shook his head. “That’s the million-dollar question, isn’t it? People don’t borrow that kind of money, from an institution like that, with those kinds of terms, unless they have a very specific, very urgent need for a large sum of cash. And they don’t do it unless they’re planning on a substantial, immediate payout to cover it.”

Aris stared at the screen, a new kind of sickening realization dawning on her. This wasn’t just about professional rivalry. This was about money, a significant amount of money that Lena clearly didn’t have but desperately needed. It devalued Aris’s entire career, her reputation, into a mere stepping stone for Lena’s financial gain. The specific personal cruelty of it was devastating: her years of intellectual output, her hard-won standing, were being dismantled not for a grand vision, but for a sordid debt.

“So she’s involved in something bigger,” Aris concluded, the words tasting bitter. “Something illegal.”

“It’s the only logical explanation,” Ben agreed, pushing his glasses up his nose. “This kind of financial burden, especially for someone in Lena’s position, screams ‘quick cash.’ And where would a neurosurgery resident get nearly three hundred thousand dollars quickly, outside of something very shady?”

The implications were chilling. Lena wasn’t just an ambitious mentee who had turned on her; she was a participant in a criminal enterprise. The anachronistic medical term in the memo suddenly made more sense, fitting into a larger, more sinister puzzle. It wasn’t just a slip-up; it was a deliberate, calculated move within a broader scheme.

“She needs a payout,” Aris repeated, thinking aloud. “A big one. And a successful malpractice suit against a renowned neurosurgeon, for millions of dollars, would certainly provide that.”

Ben nodded, his expression grim. “It’s the only thing that makes sense of this loan. She must have been promised a substantial share of Arthur Finch’s settlement.” He leaned back, his chair creaking softly. “This changes everything, Aris. This isn’t just a professional grievance anymore. This is a criminal conspiracy.”

A wave of cold certainty washed over Aris. She wasn’t fighting an internal hospital dispute; she was fighting organized fraud. The knowledge gave her a grim sense of validation, but also a renewed sense of danger. Lena was not just ruthless; she was desperate. And desperate people were unpredictable.

“We need to be careful,” Ben warned, his eyes meeting hers. “This goes beyond the hospital’s ethics committee. If this is insurance fraud, we’re talking about federal charges. And Lena, if she’s involved, is probably much deeper than we realize.”

Aris felt a cold knot tighten in her stomach, but also a surge of determination. The pieces were starting to align, chillingly. This new information, the specific monetary value of Lena’s betrayal, made the entire ordeal feel more concrete, more tangible, and far more infuriating. Her carefully constructed world, her professional integrity, was being dismantled for a measly two hundred eighty-five thousand dollars. It was a profoundly petty motive for such a grand betrayal, and that made it all the more insulting.

“Thank you, Ben,” Aris said, her voice steady now, despite the turmoil within. “This is a significant lead.”

Ben simply nodded, his gaze returning to the loan documents on the screen. The quiet hum of the computer filled the silent office, a stark reminder of the digital trail Lena had unwittingly left behind, a trail that could lead to her undoing, and, hopefully, to Aris’s vindication. The fight had just escalated.
