Chapter 4: The Unseen Collapse

#content-1

Less than three hours later, the smell of stale coffee and fried food filled the air. I sat in a diner booth across from Wall Street, the city lights reflecting in the rain-streaked window.

My access badge was gone. My corporate accounts, frozen. My position, effectively terminated.

A large television screen above the counter flickered on. The financial news channel blared.

“Reynolds Global Logistics,” the anchor announced, her voice grave. “Reports indicate an immediate breakup. Arthur Garcia’s investment syndicate moving to liquidate assets for pennies on the dollar.”

My stomach clenched. Thousands of jobs. Gone. Just like that.

I pulled out my phone. A new email notification. It was a brief, cold administrative message.

My signature on the waiver had not only relinquished the $280 million inheritance. It had also, due to an obscure clause, waived all severance rights.

Penniless. Confused. Shut out.

The true reasons behind Evelyn Reynolds’s final wishes remained a mystery, locked away. No legal recourse. Just the bitter taste of regret and the distant lights of a city that had just swallowed a corporate giant whole.
