Chapter 4: The Wellness Facade

#content-1

The more MJ disclosed, the clearer the picture became. He was hesitant at first, still terrified of Darius, but Leon Maxwell’s reassurances and Dr. Sharma’s ethical gravitas slowly chipped away at his fear. He started bringing us more than just photos; he brought us ledgers, client lists, and internal memos from Darius’s “wellness clinic.”

It was a meticulous operation, far beyond a simple fertility clinic. The name, “Dixon Wellness,” suddenly took on a sinister double meaning. It wasn’t about wellness at all.

“This isn’t just about IVF fraud,” Leon Maxwell explained one afternoon, spreading dozens of printouts across a conference room table. “Darius was running a black-market genetic solutions service. For the super-rich.”

My eyes scanned the documents. Coded client names, exorbitant fees, specific requests. “Hair color 3B,” “athletic predisposition,” “cognitive enhancement markers.”

“He promised them designer babies,” I said, feeling sick to my stomach. “He was using stolen genetic material to fulfill these requests.”

“Exactly,” Dr. Sharma confirmed, pointing to a ledger entry. “MJ says Darius kept a separate, hidden database. This wasn’t just about Dr. Hayes’s material. He had a network, harvesting genetic samples from unsuspecting donors, often from medical trials or even discarded samples from other clinics.”

“He exploited loopholes, vulnerabilities,” Leon Maxwell added. “Patients participating in medical research, sometimes without full understanding of how their biological material could be repurposed or stored. People who donated tissue for one purpose, only for Darius to use it for another, far more lucrative one.”

I imagined unsuspecting people, contributing to medical science, only for their very essence to be commodified and sold by Darius. It was a profound violation of trust and human dignity.

MJ had revealed that Darius often traveled, making discreet deals with “brokers” who supplied these samples. He had built an empire on exploitation and deceit, all hidden behind a facade of cutting-edge wellness.

Just as we were trying to piece together the implications of this vast network, my phone rang. It was Kendra. Her voice was strained, thick with a mixture of anger and confusion.

“Akira, what is this I’m hearing?” she demanded, not even a greeting. “Darius says you’ve been spreading lies. About Amara. About… everything.”

My heart sank. Darius was already trying to spin his web of deceit. “Kendra, I wouldn’t lie about something like this. I have proof.”

“Proof?” she scoffed, a raw edge to her voice. “Darius said you were bitter. That you tried to tamper with my IVF records after he broke up with you. That you wanted to ruin my chance at having a baby.”

The accusation stung, a painful twist on the truth. Darius knew exactly how to hit where it hurt, how to sow discord and fear. He had weaponized my pain.

“Kendra, listen to me,” I pleaded, keeping my voice steady despite the tremor in my hands. “Darius is lying to you. He knows we’ve found out about his clinic. He’s panicking.”

“Panicking?” Her voice rose, bordering on hysteria. “He said you were obsessed. He said you fabricated documents. That you even tried to bribe his staff, MJ, to go along with your story!”

My head snapped back. Bribery? MJ? Darius was a master manipulator, twisting every fact, every detail, into a weapon against me. He had taken MJ’s legitimate whistleblowing and turned it into an accusation of my own corrupt behavior.

“Kendra, please,” I insisted, trying to project calm. “Darius swapped the donor. He used his cousin’s genetic material. Without your consent. He used you, Kendra, for his own sick ambitions.”

There was a silence on the other end, then a sharp, shaky intake of breath. “His cousin? What are you talking about? He told me it was an anonymous donor. His own ‘superior’ genetic material was too precious to use outside of his own family line.”

The arrogance. The brazen lie. Darius had painted himself as too good, too important, for his own genetic material to be used. It was another layer of his elaborate deception, meant to flatter Kendra into believing his choice of an “anonymous” donor was a sacrifice on his part.

“He lied,” I repeated, feeling a surge of pity for her. “He wanted to make Amara a ‘designer baby’ using stolen, highly sought-after genetic material. He thought he could get rich, and take credit for a genius bloodline that wasn’t even his.”

“No,” Kendra whispered, the word laced with terror. “No, he wouldn’t. He loves Amara. He told me he carefully selected the best donor possible.”

“He did select the best, Kendra,” I said, my voice gentle. “But it was for *his* benefit, not yours. He stole it.”

“I don’t believe you,” she choked out, but her voice lacked conviction. The certainty was gone, replaced by a tremor of doubt. “Darius said you were a bitter, infertile woman trying to destroy his life.”

The sting returned, but I pushed past it. This wasn’t about my pain anymore. It was about Kendra’s, and Amara’s.

“Kendra,” I said, “I know this is hard to hear. But please, just look at the evidence yourself. Ask Darius for the original consent forms. The ones you signed. See if they match what he told you.”

She hung up without another word. I stared at my phone, my heart aching for her. Darius had not just manipulated her fertility; he had manipulated her trust, her hope, her very dreams of motherhood. And now, he was turning her against me, twisting my efforts to help into a malicious act of revenge.

I knew the confrontation with Kendra was inevitable, and it would be painful. But she deserved the truth, no matter how devastating.
