Chapter 5: A Reporter’s Ear

#content-1

Julian’s threat lingered in the air long after I left his office, a suffocating blanket of fear and doubt. His words had been calculated to hit my weakest point: my sons’ well-being. The thought of losing any remaining support, of them being completely cut off from their father, gnawed at me. But the image of Bethany’s cold, triumphant smile and the chilling contents of her online blueprint for destruction propelled me forward. I couldn’t abandon my sons to her machinations.

I needed help. Not an ally in the usual sense, but someone who could expose the truth without me having to stand entirely alone in the crosshairs. Elias Klein. He was a shrewd investigative reporter, known for his relentless pursuit of truth in the murky world of D.C. politics. I had worked with him briefly years ago, during my time as a political strategist, and I remembered his ethical compass, sharp and unwavering.

Calling him felt like stepping onto a tightrope.

I dialed his number, my thumb hovering over the send button for a long moment. It was a burner phone, untraceable, a relic from my old life, now repurposed for desperate measures. Elias answered on the second ring, his voice gruff, accustomed to late-night calls and hushed whispers.

“Klein,” he barked.

“Elias, it’s Elara Finch,” I said, trying to keep my voice even.

A beat of silence. “Elara? Well, this is a surprise. Last I heard, you’d vanished off the face of the earth to raise your boys.” There was a hint of professional curiosity in his tone, a subtle shift that told me he knew something big had to have pulled me out of my self-imposed exile.

“I tried,” I admitted, a wry smile touching my lips. “But some things… they pull you back.”

I didn’t launch directly into the full story. I knew Elias. He dealt in facts, not emotions. I started with a hook, a carefully crafted narrative designed to pique his interest without revealing all my cards at once. “I have a story for you, Elias. About a powerful political family. A youth competition. And veiled exploitation.”

I painted a picture of the Congressional Youth Leadership Summit, the ambition it represented, and the subtle, almost imperceptible ways it could be manipulated. I talked about how vulnerable children could be when caught in the crossfire of adult ambition, skirting around the specifics of my sons and Bethany.

Elias listened, his usual cynicism softened by a spark of intrigue. “Youth competition? ‘Veiled exploitation’?” He repeated my words, testing them on his tongue. “Sounds like a slow news day piece, Elara. Unless there’s more to it.”

“There is,” I affirmed. “Something very ugly. Something that goes beyond the surface. Something that involves systemic manipulation for financial gain, hidden under the guise of family legacy.”

I could almost hear the gears turning in his head. He recognized the language, the scent of scandal in high places. “Julian Hawthorne, by any chance?” he asked, his voice now lower, more serious. “And his lovely new wife, Bethany?”

My heart skipped a beat. He was closer than I thought. “You’re a good reporter, Elias.”

He chuckled, a dry, humorless sound. “I’ve been around the block, Elara. And Bethany Hawthorne? She’s quite the piece of work. There have always been whispers.”

“Whispers?” I prompted, leaning into the phone, sensing a critical piece of information.

“Oh, you know, D.C. gossip,” he said, downplaying it slightly, but I heard the deeper meaning. “Before Julian, she was married to a prominent real estate developer. And before that, a state senator from Georgia. Both highly influential men. Both with children from previous marriages. And in both cases, there were… irregularities. Legal battles over trust funds, unexpected changes to wills, allegations of emotional manipulation against the stepchildren. Nothing ever stuck, of course. Bethany is too clever for that.”

My blood ran cold. This wasn’t just a one-off scheme. This was a pattern. A modus operandi. Bethany wasn’t just targeting my sons; she was a serial predator, leaving a trail of financially crippled stepchildren in her wake. This intelligence, raw and unconfirmed as it was, solidified my resolve. My sons weren’t just pawns; they were her next victims in a long line.

“Irregularities,” I repeated, the word tasting bitter. “So, she has a history of this?”

“A reputation for ruthlessness, let’s just say,” Elias confirmed. “She’s known for ‘handling’ difficult family matters with extreme prejudice for her powerful spouses. Always discreet, always within the letter of the law, or so it seemed. Never anything concrete enough to publish. Just enough smoke to suggest a fire.”

“Well, Elias,” I said, a new confidence flowing through me, “I think I have the fire.”

He paused, then took a deep breath. “Elara, you know the game. Whispers are just whispers. To run a story like this, especially against a sitting Congressman and his influential wife, I need more than vague accusations. I need concrete proof. Documents. Recordings. Something undeniable.”

“I have it,” I stated, my voice firm. “Archived online posts. Legal documents. Timelines. Everything to connect Bethany’s blueprint to the actual sabotage. And to the financial consequences for the boys.”

“Are you saying you have proof of Julian’s complicity?” Elias asked, sensing the magnitude of the story.

I hesitated. “Julian is… complicated. He’s easily manipulated by Bethany, and ultimately a coward. But yes, I have evidence that shows he signed off on everything. He’s enabling her, whether he fully understands the extent of her malice or not.”

Elias was silent for a moment, processing the information. The stakes were rising with every word. This wasn’t just a political hit piece; it was a human drama, deeply personal, with potentially devastating consequences for a powerful family.

“This is big, Elara,” he finally said, his voice now serious, devoid of any pretense of casual conversation. “If what you’re saying is true, this could bring down a Congressman. It could shatter Bethany Hawthorne’s career. It could be career-defining for me, and career-ending for them. Are you sure you want to go through with this? Because once it’s out, there’s no going back.”

“I’m sure,” I said, the words echoing with a fierce resolve. “My sons deserve justice, Elias. And they deserve their future. I’ll get you everything you need.”

“Meet me tomorrow morning,” he instructed, giving me a discrete location and time. “Bring it all. Every last shred of evidence. And be prepared, Elara. When this breaks, it’s going to be a firestorm.”

I hung up, my heart pounding, but a strange sense of calm had settled over me. The decision was made. The path forward, though treacherous, was clear. I was trading my peace for their future. And I knew, with absolute certainty, that it was a sacrifice I was willing to make. The whispers Elias had heard about Bethany only reinforced my conviction. This wasn’t just about Julian and me anymore; it was about stopping a serial manipulator who preyed on vulnerable children for profit.
