The follow-up visit to Dr. Finch’s office was, by now, a routine. I attended with Sofia, who insisted on accompanying me, her presence a quiet shield against the lingering shadows of the initial attack. The clinic, usually a sanctuary of calm, felt different now. The staff moved with a noticeable apprehension, whispers following Serafina’s name like a phantom. I’d heard she had returned to the clinic multiple times since the incident, not for medical care, but for “blessings” and “cleansing rituals” in the very rooms she had desecrated. She was, as Gianna loved to report, convinced the place was haunted.

Dr. Finch, however, remained the epitome of professional detachment. His focus was always solely on my health and the baby’s development. He meticulously reviewed my charts, his brow furrowed in concentration, completely oblivious to the undercurrents of family politics and supernatural fears swirling around him.

“Everything looks excellent, Elara,” he announced, gesturing to the ultrasound screen. “The baby is thriving, healthy. You’re recovering remarkably well.”

I smiled, a genuine warmth spreading through me. The image of the tiny, perfectly formed spine brought a profound sense of peace.

Sofia, sitting beside me, maintained a polite but watchful silence.

“We were concerned, of course, after the incident,” Dr. Finch continued, almost an afterthought, as he jotted notes on my file. “Such a volatile situation. Though, I must admit, I was somewhat prepared.”

My eyes met Sofia’s. Prepared?

Dr. Finch looked up, catching my gaze. “Oh, yes. Quite. I suppose you’re aware that Ms. Ricci had a rather extensive consultation with me about two weeks prior to… the event.”

My blood ran cold. Sofia’s posture stiffened almost imperceptibly.

“A consultation?” I asked, my voice carefully neutral.

“Yes, a bit unusual, actually,” Dr. Finch mused, tapping his pen against his chin. “She was very specific. Asked about your pregnancy’s fragility, the recovery period for various… complications. And rather oddly, she inquired about the placement of our security cameras, particularly in the private recovery wing, and any potential blind spots.”

He chuckled lightly, a sound utterly out of place. “I assumed she was being overly cautious, perhaps worried about some general family threat. Didn’t think much of it at the time, of course. Just gave her standard information about our protocols and safety measures.”

My mind reeled. Two weeks before. Fragility. Complications. Camera blind spots. It wasn’t just a fit of rage. It was meticulously planned, every detail considered. She had scouted the location, assessed my vulnerability, plotted her angle of attack. The “consultation” wasn’t about concern for my safety; it was about gathering intelligence for her assault. The revelation hit me with the force of a tidal wave, washing away any lingering doubt about Serafina’s cold, calculated premeditation.

Sofia caught my eye, a grim understanding passing between us. Her lips tightened into a thin line, betraying the shock she otherwise kept hidden.

“And you shared this information with her?” Sofia asked, her voice calm, though a sharp edge was detectable beneath her politeness.

“Naturally,” Dr. Finch replied, completely unaware of the implications of his admission. “As a patient, she had a right to inquire about general clinic procedures. I wouldn’t discuss specific patient details, of course, but general layout and security… that’s public knowledge for anyone in the family.”

“I see,” Sofia said, a faint tremor in her voice.

He then moved on, discussing my dietary needs, seemingly oblivious to the bomb he had just dropped. Elara and Sofia exchanged a look of pure, unadulterated horror. The doctor, a reputable professional, had inadvertently provided the final, undeniable piece of the puzzle. Serafina hadn’t just been desperate; she had been a predator, studying her prey, learning its weaknesses before pouncing.

After the examination, as we were leaving the clinic, I saw Serafina in the waiting area. She looked ghastly. Her hair was disheveled, her eyes sunken, darting nervously around the room as if expecting a ghost to appear. She clutched a small, leather-bound book to her chest, whispering to herself. She didn’t even notice us.

“She’s convinced the clinic is cursed now,” Sofia murmured, observing Serafina with a detached clinical interest. “She believes the bad omens are following her, even here.”

The irony was stark. Serafina, who had so callously planned my suffering, was now unraveling under the weight of her own guilt and paranoia, imagining specters where there were only the echoes of her own vile actions. Dr. Finch’s innocent slip had confirmed the depths of her depravity, and with it, the undeniable truth: Serafina was a cold, calculating enemy, and Dante was her willing accomplice. The stakes had just been raised even higher, transforming a personal vendetta into a clear-cut case of attempted harm against a family member, with premeditation.

“We have to use this,” I said to Sofia, my voice low and fierce.

Sofia nodded, her gaze fixed on Serafina, who was now arguing animatedly with a bewildered receptionist about “evil spirits.”

“Don Marcello values truth,” Sofia said. “Especially when it’s uncovered without fanfare. Dr. Finch’s testimony, combined with the dossier, will be irrefutable.”

A chill ran down my spine, but it wasn’t from fear. It was the cold, hard precision of justice unfolding. Serafina had believed she was clever, but her desperate inquiries had merely tied the noose tighter around her own neck, and by extension, around Dante’s. The game was far from over, but the pieces were moving into place, and the true cost of their ambition was about to be revealed.

A crime family matriarch, pregnant and attacked, must navigate shadowy loyalties after her husband sacrifices her honor for his power.
