Cancelled Mom's Gala, Then Collected on Sister's Debt After They Snubbed Me
Leo didn’t waste any time. The following day, he arranged a meeting with Beatrice at her home. He called me immediately after, his voice tight with a mix of frustration and sadness.
“She admitted it, Julian,” he said. “Everything.”
My heart sank, yet a part of me wasn’t surprised.
“She knew Serena was failing?” I asked.
“She knew,” Leo confirmed. “And she knew Serena was taking money from other relatives, though she tried to minimize that part. Said they were ‘small, temporary loans’.”
“But she never told anyone,” I stated, the bitterness rising.
“Never,” he reiterated. “She was terrified of scandal, of what people would say. Our family’s ‘good name,’ her perfect image…it was more important than protecting us, than being honest.”
He recounted the confrontation. Leo had arrived at Beatrice’s house, not with accusations, but with facts. He laid out the pattern of Serena’s borrowing from Mark, Susan, and others, meticulously detailing the inconsistencies and the lack of full repayment. He then connected it to my $48,000 loan, presenting it as part of a larger, escalating pattern.
Beatrice had initially tried to deny it, to deflect, to dismiss his concerns as “family squabbles.” She’d even tried to turn it back on Leo, accusing him of sowing discord.
“She played the victim, of course,” Leo explained, his voice strained. “Said I was being unfair, that Serena was just going through a ‘difficult patch’.”
“But you didn’t let up?” I asked.
“No,” he said. “I kept bringing it back to the money, to the deception. I told her I knew about Elegance Events being insolvent, and how you had been lied to. I asked her how she could possibly justify allowing Serena to manipulate us all, to gamble with our hard-earned money, just to maintain appearances.”
That’s when Beatrice had cracked. Twist 6.
“She started to cry,” Leo continued, his voice softening with a touch of reluctant pity. “Real tears, not her usual theatrical ones. She admitted she knew Elegance Events was in dire straits. She said Serena had confessed to her months ago, begging her not to tell anyone, especially you and me, because she was so ashamed.”
“Ashamed, or just trying to protect her lifeline?” I muttered.
“Both, probably,” Leo conceded. “Beatrice said Serena told her that if anyone found out, particularly that her business was collapsing, it would ruin her reputation entirely, and she would lose everything.”
Beatrice had been caught between her maternal instinct to protect her daughter and her deep-seated fear of social judgment. She chose the path of silence, enabling Serena’s deceit and allowing the exploitation to continue.
“She said she truly believed Serena would turn it around,” Leo explained, “that if she just had a little more time, a little more money, she could save the business. And she couldn’t bear the thought of our family becoming the subject of gossip, of people knowing her daughter was a failure.”
“So she sacrificed us,” I concluded. “Her other children, her extended family, all to protect Serena’s image and her own.”
“That’s exactly what I told her,” Leo confirmed. “I told her she was complicit, that her silence had allowed Serena to hurt us all. And that she had, in essence, chosen Serena’s pride over our well-being.”
The raw truth of Beatrice’s confession was a painful blow. I had always known she favored Serena, but to actively participate in the cover-up, to enable such deep deception, felt like a profound betrayal. It shattered the last vestiges of the idyllic family image I had once held onto.
“What did she say then?” I asked, envisioning my mother, her perfect facade finally crumbling.
“She kept saying she was sorry, that she didn’t know what to do,” Leo replied. “She was distraught, Julian. Truly distraught. Not just for Serena, but for herself, for the shame this would bring if it ever came out.”
“It’s going to come out,” I reminded him. “It already is.”
“I know,” he said, his voice grim. “And I told her that. I told her the time for hiding was over. I made it clear that I wasn’t just doing this for you, but for all of us. And that the only way forward was complete honesty and accountability.”
Leo’s resolve was unwavering. His quiet investigation had transformed him from a neutral observer into a fierce advocate for truth within our fractured family.
“What’s next?” I asked.
“We need to get to the bottom of everything,” he stated. “If Serena was so desperate, if she was moving assets around, there’s likely more to uncover. I think we need to look at her business dealings even more closely. And I think there’s someone else who might have information.”
“Who?”
“Her former accountant,” Leo said, his voice hardening. “Mr. Alistair Davies. If anyone knew the true state of Elegance Events, it would be him. And if he was complicit in any way, he’ll have a lot to answer for.”
I felt a cold shiver. The stakes were rising dramatically. This was no longer just about a personal debt; it was about exposing a sophisticated web of financial deception that reached far beyond our immediate family.
“Be careful, Leo,” I warned. “She’s proven herself to be ruthless.”
“I will,” he promised. “But I’m not backing down. This has gone on long enough.”
The call ended, and I was left with the echoes of Beatrice’s tearful confession. The perfect mother, the pillar of the family, was revealed to be a complicit enabler, choosing appearance over integrity. It hurt, deeply. But the pain was quickly replaced by a renewed sense of purpose. Leo was right. This had to stop. And if it meant tearing down the false facade of our family, then so be it. The truth, finally, was beginning to emerge, piece by painful piece. And there was no turning back now.
