Chapter 5: Cracks in the Facade

#content-1

The annual Petrova family dinner at Silas’s estate was a masterclass in forced normalcy.

The grand dining room, usually a place of quiet, opulent meals, buzzed with strained laughter and superficial conversation.

Cousins I barely knew, aunts whose smiles never reached their eyes, all gathered under the watchful gaze of Silas Petrova, who sat at the head of the impossibly long table like a silent, all-seeing god.

Bianca, ever the charming hostess, floated among the guests, her laugh light, her conversation effortless.

But I saw the tension in her jaw, the way her eyes darted nervously towards Silas.

The Aurora Holdings threat still hung heavy over us, an invisible sword.

Dominic, my father, was a nervous wreck.

He clung to a crystal tumbler filled with expensive whiskey, downing it with alarming speed.

His eyes were bloodshot, his movements jerky.

He avoided Silas’s gaze entirely, and whenever Bianca looked at him, he flinched.

I watched him across the table, a gnawing suspicion growing inside me.

Isolde’s confession about framing Dominic, combined with Leo’s insistent questions about internal power struggles, made me see my father in a new light—not just a victim, but a pawn, perhaps even a reluctant conspirator.

As the dinner progressed, the alcohol loosened Dominic’s tongue, but only to a point.

He started slurring his words, his face growing flushed.

Silas, catching sight of his son’s deteriorating state, fixed him with a look that could curdle milk.

Dominic immediately rose, mumbling something about needing air.

I saw my chance.

I excused myself moments later, following the direction Dominic had taken towards the sprawling gardens.

I found him slumped on a stone bench in a secluded alcove, the air heavy with the scent of jasmine.

He startled when I approached, nearly dropping his tumbler.

“Elara,” he slurred, his eyes wide.

“What are you doing out here?”

“I wanted to talk,” I said, sitting beside him.

The night air was cool, a stark contrast to the oppressive warmth of the dining room.

“About everything. About Isolde. About the money.”

He recoiled, shaking his head violently.

“No, Elara. Don’t. You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“I know enough,” I pressed, my voice low and urgent.

“I know Isolde was stealing. And I know she framed you for it. But I also know about the ledger, Dad. The shell charity. The millions.”

His face crumpled, and tears welled in his bloodshot eyes.

He didn’t try to deny it.

“Silas… he made me,” he whispered, his voice thick with misery.

“He threatened everything. Your mother. You. He said if I didn’t cooperate, if I didn’t sign off on his deals, if I didn’t make those transfers, he would take everything from us.”

His confession was raw, desperate.

Twist 6 – Layer 1.

He was coerced, a puppet in Silas’s grand scheme.

My heart ached for him, for the broken man he had become.

“He forced me to oversee the ‘charity’ transfers,” Dominic continued, sobbing now.

“To sign off on the deals with the Valentis. It was all his doing. He needed me to keep things looking legitimate, to be his frontman.”

“But the amounts, Dad,” I pressed, trying to keep my voice even.

“The money moving through that charity was enormous. Millions. How could you agree to that?”

He looked up at me, his eyes filled with a tortured anguish.

“I had no choice, Elara. He has eyes everywhere. He threatened to expose Bianca’s… her own ventures. Her attempts to build her own nest egg. He would have ruined her, and then us.”

He took a large gulp of his whiskey, then wiped his mouth with the back of his hand.

“But Bianca,” he muttered, almost to himself, his voice slurring further, a haunted look in his eyes.

“She always pushed me. To take more. Faster. She said Silas was getting old, soft. That we needed to secure our future, away from his control.”

Twist 6 – Layer 2.

The words hung in the air, cold and unexpected.

Bianca. My mother.

“What are you saying?” I asked, a sudden chill running through me.

Dominic flinched, as if realizing what he’d just let slip.

He shook his head frantically.

“Nothing. Nothing, Elara. Just the whiskey talking. Your mother… she just wanted us safe. Wanted a way out.”

He tried to stand, stumbling slightly, eager to escape the conversation.

But I grabbed his arm, holding him firm.

“Dad, tell me. Did Mom know about the fraud? Did she push you to steal from Silas?”

He looked away, unable to meet my gaze.

“She… she always had a plan, Elara. Always. She said the Petrova empire was a gilded cage. She wanted to break free. And she said the only way to do it was to take a piece of the cage with us.”

He pulled his arm free, his eyes wide with a desperate plea.

“Don’t tell Silas I said anything, Elara. Please. He’ll kill me. He’ll kill us all.”

Then he turned and staggered back towards the house, leaving me alone in the cool night air.

The silence that followed was deafening, filled only by the distant murmur of the party and the frantic beating of my own heart.

Bianca had her own agenda.

Dominic’s words, slurred and panicked as they were, painted a devastating picture.

My mother, the victim I had tried to protect, the woman who had dismissed the assault on Isolde as a mere “family matter,” was not just trapped by Silas.

She was playing her own game.

Pushing Dominic to “take more, faster.”

Was she collaborating with Silas, or something far worse?

The thought that she might have been actively involved, orchestrating her own schemes, using my father as a pawn, was a betrayal that went deeper than anything I had imagined.

It overshadowed even Isolde’s manipulative confession.

My mother, the person I believed in, the one I thought I was fighting for, might be another architect of this ruin.

A cold dread settled deep in my bones.

The family façade wasn’t just cracking; it was shattering around me.

Everyone had secrets. Everyone had their own motivations.

And I realized, with a sickening certainty, that I might be the biggest pawn of them all.

I looked back at the brightly lit windows of the estate, the sounds of laughter echoing faintly.

Behind those walls, beneath the surface of wealth and power, lay a venomous nest of lies and betrayals.

And I was now standing right in the middle of it, armed only with growing suspicion and the devastating realization that the enemy might be closer than I ever dared to imagine.

I had to find out the truth about Bianca.

Dominic’s desperate hint was just the beginning.
