Chapter 18: Sunday on the Porch

The early morning mist still clung to the fields surrounding my timber yard. I rounded the bend, expecting to see my crew already at work, the rhythmic whine of chainsaws cutting through the crisp air. Instead, I saw a dozen vehicles, old beat-up sedans and pickup trucks, blocking the entrance to my property.

A makeshift wooden barricade, crudely constructed from planks of my own lumber, stretched across the main gate. A padlock, thick and rusty, secured the chain.

My blood ran cold.

Silas stood at the front, flanked by my uncles, Isaac and Jacob, and several other compound members. Their faces were set in grim, unyielding lines. Uncle Isaac, a man whose laughter used to shake the rafters of our old farmhouse, now held a tattered copy of the New Canaan Fellowship charter like a weapon.

“Ethan Cross,” Silas called out, his voice carrying clearly in the stillness. “This land, these machines, this business—it was all built with covenant tithes, as the elders have confirmed.”

He pointed to my logging trucks, their massive tires still caked with mud from the last job. “Your worldly wealth, gained outside the fellowship, belongs to the fellowship, to serve the Lord’s work.”

“This is my business, Silas!” I shouted, striding toward the barricade. “I built this with my own hands, my own sweat! Not with your cult’s money!”

Uncle Jacob stepped forward, his eyes burning with zealotry. “The Lord provides, Ethan. You strayed from the path, but the Lord reclaims what is His.”

“You have no legal right to my property!” I yelled. “I have deeds, titles, permits!”

Silas just smiled, a familiar, chilling expression. “A legal petition, signed by Harlan Finch, has been filed with the county clerk. It states that the capital to establish this enterprise was sourced from undisclosed ‘fellowship funds’ over the past seven years.”

My mind reeled. They were claiming my entire life’s work, everything I had built since leaving the compound, was funded by them. It was a lie, a brazen, audacious lie, designed to strip me of everything.

“Get off my property!” I demanded, pushing against the barricade.

Uncle Isaac planted his feet, his weathered face inches from mine. “You will not defile sacred property, Ethan. The Lord has spoken.”

Behind him, I saw my younger cousin, Samuel, a boy I’d taught to fell his first tree, painting crude biblical verses on the side of one of my log splitters. He wouldn’t meet my gaze.

I felt a surge of cold fury, quickly followed by a sickening sense of powerlessness. They weren’t just blockading my yard; they were trying to erase my existence, claim my identity, and leave me with nothing to fight back with. They had taken my family, poisoned them, and now they were taking my livelihood.

Silas watched me, his face impassive. “Consider this a reclamation, Ethan. A sign from the Lord that you must return to the fold.”

He turned, gesturing to the others, who began securing additional ropes and banners across the gate. “The Lord’s work continues.”
