The 2 AM Highway Delivery: How a Quiet Night Shift Clerk Exposed His Stepfather’s $450,000 Corporate Fraud
Deputy Kroll walked with stiff, deliberate steps towards the employee breakroom, his gaze fixed on the task. Richard Sallow followed close behind, his arms crossed, a faint, almost imperceptible smirk playing on his lips.
I stood by the counter, my hands clasped tightly behind my back. My mind raced, connecting the dots. Toby Danforth’s panicked words from earlier, the $1,500 payment. It clicked into place.
Kroll unlatched the employee locker assigned to me. The metal door creaked open, revealing my worn winter coat hanging inside. He reached in, his hand disappearing into the pocket.
He pulled his hand out slowly, and in it was a thick wad of bills. My stomach dropped. They were identical to the vintage paper currency Toby had dumped on the counter hours ago.
“Well, now,” Kroll said, his voice low, a note of surprise in it. He held up the cash. It was a substantial stack, probably $12,000.
Richard stepped forward, a look of feigned shock on his face. “Arthur! What is the meaning of this? Unauthorized cash, in your locker?”
“That’s not mine,” I stated, my voice calm despite the tremor in my chest. “Someone planted it.”
Kroll looked from the cash to me, then back to the cash. “Arthur, this looks pretty clear-cut. This is Sallow Fuel Stop property, found directly in your possession.”
“Toby Danforth,” I said, pointing towards the back of the store, “he must have slipped into the breakroom earlier. During the shift change.” My words felt futile, drowned out by the weight of the evidence.
Richard scoffed. “Toby Danforth? He abandoned a vehicle here hours ago, Arthur. He’s long gone. No one else was here during your shift besides you.”
Kroll carefully placed the vintage bills into an evidence bag. He pulled out his handcuffs. “Arthur Garrick, I’m detaining you for questioning regarding the theft of company funds.”
The cold steel clicked around my wrists. I offered no resistance, my eyes fixed on Richard. He allowed himself a small, triumphant smile, then reached for the office keys hanging on the hook behind the counter.
He took possession of them, his fingers brushing against mine as he pulled them free. The small, significant gesture sealed my fate, for now. He had won this round.
