The next morning, the laundromat’s fluorescent glow felt a million miles away. Back at Oakridge, the air was thick with unspoken tension. Maya walked into the communal kitchen, and the small cluster of teens at the breakfast bar went silent, their easy laughter abruptly cut off. Chloe, her closest friend since they were twelve, turned her back, busying herself with scrubbing an already clean mug.

It was Hatcher’s work, swift and brutal, just as she promised. The whispers started the moment Maya refused to sign. Now, the silence was louder than any accusation.

“Morning,” Maya offered, her voice sounding unnaturally bright in the sudden quiet. She grabbed a bruised apple from the fruit bowl, her stomach tightening into a knot.

No one answered. Chloe’s shoulders remained stiff, her blonde hair catching the morning light as she polished the mug with intense focus. Another girl, Sarah, quickly gathered her things and scurried out, her eyes darting away from Maya’s.

“Chloe?” Maya tried again, moving closer. “Can we talk?”

Chloe finally turned, her face a mask of carefully constructed indifference. Her eyes, usually so expressive, were cold, distant. “Talk about what, Maya? About how you’re making everyone else’s lives harder?”

The words stung, sharper than any slap. “What are you talking about?”

“Hatcher called a meeting last night,” Chloe said, her voice flat. “Said you were trying to stir up trouble. That if you don’t drop whatever ‘legal’ nonsense you’re pulling, she’s going to raise everyone’s rent by fifty dollars next month. Starting with the seniors.”

Fifty dollars. For most of them, that was the difference between three square meals and skipping dinner, between textbooks and going without. Hatcher knew exactly which pressure points to hit.

“She’s lying, Chloe! Her lease expired! She has no right to do any of this,” Maya burst out, the crumpled copy of the lease clause Arthur had given her burning a hole in her pocket.

Chloe shook her head, a flicker of genuine hurt in her eyes, quickly masked by anger. “Do you hear yourself? ‘Her lease expired’? That’s crazy, Maya. She owns this place. She always has.” She threw her hands up in exasperation. “Just sign the paper, Maya. Take your stupid payout and leave. Don’t ruin it for everyone else.”

Before Maya could respond, Chloe stormed out of the kitchen, leaving a lingering scent of the cheap lavender soap she always used. The remaining teens avoided Maya’s gaze, some fiddling with their phones, others staring blankly at the wall. The message was clear: Maya was radioactive.

Later that day, in the school cafeteria, it was no different. Chloe and her usual lunch crowd sat at their table, animated and laughing. When Maya approached, clutching her tray, the conversation died. Chloe caught Maya’s eye, and then, almost imperceptibly, shifted her chair closer to another friend, creating a physical barrier.

The subtle shunning was a more potent weapon than direct confrontation. It cut Maya off from the very people she was trying to help, the ones Hatcher was exploiting. The casual cruelties, the averted glances, the hurried departures – they chipped away at her resolve, leaving her feeling exposed and vulnerable.

Maya ate her lunch alone, the bland food tasteless in her mouth. The copy of the expired lease, now smoothed and carefully folded in her notebook, felt heavier than ever. It held the key to their freedom, yet it was also the reason she was now an outcast. Hatcher had expertly turned the victims against the very person fighting for them. The irony was a bitter pill to swallow.

But as she stared at the bustling cafeteria, a new kind of determination solidified within her. If Hatcher wanted to isolate her, fine. Maya would use that isolation to work, to focus. She had Arthur’s advice, and now, a new purpose: to not just save her own inheritance, but to free all of them from Hatcher’s tyrannical grasp. Alone, she would still fight.
