The room was heavy, smelling of old leather and cigar smoke, a stark contrast to the sterile, digital world Elias Thorne usually inhabited. Don Alessandro Volpe sat behind a massive mahogany desk, a figure of quiet authority. His face, etched with decades of power and control, revealed nothing. Colonel Moretti was not present; this was a discussion meant for the shadows, conducted by its denizens.

Elias, impeccably dressed but with the coiled tension of a predator, stood before the Don. He had laid out the evidence methodically, a series of documents, photographs, and the now-familiar ledger of Marco Rossi’s illicit financial dealings.

“Marco Rossi’s ambition has exceeded his discretion, Don Volpe,” Elias began, his voice devoid of emotion, a professional delivering a grim report. “He has siphoned funds from ‘Front Street Import-Export,’ from ‘Grandview Development Group.’ Over two million dollars diverted to offshore accounts. Unreported. Unsanctioned.”

He paused, letting the numbers hang in the air, a testament to Marco’s brazen disregard for the established order. Don Volpe remained motionless, his eyes, dark and unblinking, fixed on Elias.

“This is a direct violation of our revenue-sharing agreements,” Elias continued, referring to the intricate financial structure that held Volpe’s organization together. “It threatens the stability of our operations. It shows disrespect.”

He then shifted, subtly, to the collateral damage. “And his personal conduct. The abuse of his wife, Isabella Moretti. While not directly a matter for our council, it has drawn undue attention. Unwanted scrutiny. The Colonel, her father, a military man, has been actively seeking intervention. Creating noise.”

Elias placed a photograph on the table – a discreet shot of a newspaper clipping detailing a minor legal inquiry into one of Marco’s “legitimate” businesses, an inquiry sparked by Colonel Moretti’s initial, desperate inquiries.

“Marco’s reckless behavior draws the eye of the legitimate world onto our operations, Don Volpe,” Elias concluded. “He is a liability. A growing problem that compromises all of us.”

Don Volpe finally stirred, a slow, deliberate movement. His gaze drifted from the documents to Elias, then beyond, as if seeing something only he could perceive. He took a long, slow drag from his cigar, the tip glowing crimson in the subdued light.

“He stole from the family,” Don Volpe rumbled, his voice low, gravelly, but with an underlying steel that chilled the air. “He put his own petty greed before the greater good. And he did so with arrogance.”

He exhaled a plume of smoke. “The girl’s condition, the Colonel’s agitation… they are a nuisance. A complication. But the theft… that is a disease.”

Elias remained silent, knowing the Don preferred silence for his pronouncements.

“A disease must be excised,” Don Volpe stated, his eyes locking onto Elias. “Before it spreads. Before it weakens the body.”

His words were not a question, not a suggestion. They were a definitive, chilling judgment. The end was near for Marco Rossi. The abuse of Izzy, while certainly a factor in bringing the situation to light, was secondary. Marco’s true crime, in the eyes of the underworld, was his financial betrayal. That was the unforgivable sin.

“The meeting at the hunting lodge tonight,” Elias prompted, knowing the Don was aware of Sofia’s intel.

Don Volpe nodded slowly, a slight tightening of his lips. “It will be his final accounting. He thinks he can talk his way out of it. He thinks he can present his papers, make his excuses.”

A faint, mirthless smile touched the Don’s face. “He is mistaken. The terms have already been settled. His mother has ensured that.”

Elias felt a cold satisfaction. Sofia Rossi’s calculated gamble had paid off. She had sacrificed her son to preserve her own position and the family’s standing. It was a brutal form of justice, but a clear one in their world.

“Ensure the Colonel’s daughter is no longer present,” Don Volpe commanded, his voice returning to its gravelly monotone. “She is a civilian. An innocent in this particular matter. No collateral damage.”

This was the sliver of a moral compass Elias still clung to. Don Volpe, ruthless as he was, observed certain lines. Children, true innocents, were not to be directly harmed, not by the “family’s” justice.

“It will be handled, Don Volpe,” Elias confirmed.

The Don merely nodded, turning his gaze back to the flickering amber of his cigar. His decision was made, cold and absolute. Marco Rossi had violated the sacred codes of the underworld, and the punishment would be swift and final.

Elias left the room, the scent of cigar smoke clinging to his clothes. He immediately contacted Colonel Moretti, a single, urgent message. “Tonight. The estate. Clear the board. The Don’s judgment has been delivered.” The Colonel knew what that meant. The time for subtlety was over. The game of shadows was about to erupt into a violent, decisive confrontation, and Izzy was still inside.
