The reinforced door jolted inward, swinging open just enough to reveal Brenda and Evelyn. They both lunged forward, Evelyn still straining against the hydraulic wedge.
“Get the drives!” Brenda yelled, her eyes scanning the dark room.
As Evelyn pulled the heavy wedge back, freeing the door, a thick leather portfolio slipped from her jacket. It hit the tile floor with a soft thud, sliding through the gap created by the sprung door and coming to rest near my feet.
It was unexpectedly heavy, packed full.
My mind raced. This had to be it. The payment receipts from Kincaid’s agency. Proof of their conspiracy. This was the leverage I needed.
Brenda, focused on the vault’s interior, didn’t notice the dropped item immediately. Evelyn, still wrestling with the hydraulic wedge, also missed it.
It was a small window of opportunity.
I moved instinctively, my hand darting down. My fingers closed around the cool leather, snatching it off the floor. I pulled it back into the shadowy room just as Brenda stepped fully through the now-breached doorway.
“What was that?” Evelyn asked, her eyes darting to the floor.
“Nothing,” I lied, my voice steady. My stun baton was still in my other hand, heavy and ready.
Brenda, now fully inside, stopped, her eyes adjusting to the dimness. She held up her pry-bar, not quite sure where I was in the darkness.
The portfolio was clutched tight in my hand. It was an unexpected gift, a piece of their plan I now held.
