A sharp knock on the door startled Maya. Dr. Aris Albright, a man with a stiff posture and colder eyes, stood on her doorstep.
“Emergency welfare check,” he announced, not waiting for an invitation. “Dr. Albright, municipal services.”
He walked straight into the living room, his gaze sweeping over Toby’s bright plastic toys scattered on the rug, then to the half-packed boxes of moving supplies.
“Irregular touring hours,” he murmured, scribbling on a notepad. “Upcoming night rehearsals. Unstable environment for a four-year-old.”
Maya gripped her hands, her knuckles white. “I have documentation, Doctor. Toby has a dedicated room, proper care…”
Dr. Albright barely glanced at the folder she offered. “Your financial instability, Ms. Kincaid, combined with your demanding schedule, raises significant concerns.”
His words echoed Damon’s exact legal phrasing. Maya felt a chill.
“Are you biased, Dr. Albright?” she asked, her voice low. “Are you working with my brother?”
He stiffened, his pen hovering over the paper. “My report is based on facts, Ms. Kincaid. However, without access to your funds, fighting this battle will prove… challenging.”
He gave her a tight, humorless smile. “Especially when I file my full report tomorrow morning.”
